Piccolo with low C key

Post by MissyHPhoenix »

I am working through the Trevor Wye piccolo workbook and was shocked to come across a piece from a symphony (can't remember which one it is .... ) that calls for a piccolo to go down to a low C and D flat! Trevor Wye writes a comment along the lines of "if you don't have a piccolo with the low C, you will need to borrow one, or perhaps use a treble flute and transpose ... ", something like that anyhow. I had no idea that there were piccolos that have a low C -- is it on another footjoint or something? Does anybody have one? Who makes them? I wouldn't think that there would be much call for them, or am I wrong in that? I thought that the piccolo didn't have the low C extra key because it caused intonation problems, but again I could be wrong in that idea, too. It's not like I know everything there is to know about flutes .....

Just wondering. I am NOT planning to go out and buy a piccolo with a low C key .... altho I think Phineas thinks I buy every flute I see .....

They used to be made. I remember that Brannen made them. I think you can still get them actually but they're always a special order item.
