buying a used Trevor james cantabile II flute ..???

Post by griffplus »

:? I am going to look at a used flute open hole, B foot Trevor James Cantabile II the seller is asking $700.00 but willing to go down to about $550. The owner states that the flute was bought for his daughter and she didnt like it 4 years ago and it has just sat around in its case since then. What is a common asking price for this type flute in good condition?

That price seems fair. However, I would count on it needing some repair or adjustment. Just because the flute itself may be in good condition, does not mean it is 100% playable. Play on it first if you can. If it is not playable, it is not a deal breaker. Count on about $200 dollars into it for cleaning, adjustment and possible pad replacement.(May be less, but I always prepare for the worse!)

Frankly, if you are not experienced buying instruments, I would go buy used one from a reputable dealer. You will not only be able to play on it, but most dealers have someone onsite to make adjustments for you. The dealer will usually have a guarantee on it as well.

I bought the TJ cantabile II it has been a good starter flute. I am taking lessons now and I would say it has been rock solid. I will have to take it in for pad/key that is buzzing a little bit. My flute teacher feels that If I Try a GUO headjoint with my cantabile II body I will grow better and be more relaxed as I develop.

it turned out that now in 10/2014 the flute has been perfect. great response and great tone. I have had it adjusted and it has a strong sound in the lower and upper register.
