How did you get into flute playing?
Hello, I was just wondering how you all got
into playing the flute? For me it started 13 years ago in 6th grade when I used
to play the clarinet and my friend played the flute. When we''d go to each
other''s houses we''d bring our instruments. We liked each others
instruments better than our own. She taught me how to play a song on her flute.
I liked playing it so much that my mom convinced the music teacher to let me
play flute in band. The teacher who originally made me take the clarinet,
reluctantly agreed. I love the flute! Have a nice day! [:)] Jackie

I started learning the tin whistle
a few years ago, just because I've always wanted to play something, and the the
piano was not too convenient to bring along in the car. From the tin whistle, i
started playing a simple system flute and, most recently, a boehm system flute.

i started in 5th grade, that's
when you usually start around here. i played the piano and took lessons at the
time, but as i started playing flute more i stopped taking piano lessons and got
more into the flute. then in 8th grade i started the piccolo, it's so much
fun.. especially when we have concerts, because everyone else complains that
their instrument is heavy and i can just stick mine in my backpack. : )

Wow, I started in fifth grade as
well. But my mother and older sister both played the flute and they taught me
how to hold it and how to make noises out of it, definately NOT a tone, lol.
Then I just loved it, I took lessons for about 5 1/2 years and it's wonderful!
I started picc freshman year and played it for two years in my school band and
one year just for the musical (this year). I love both and theyr'e so much fun!
I hope everyone has a chance to play an instrument, it's, to me, one of the
only things that keeps me going on really bad days. I hope you love it as much
as I do and keep playing for life!!! -Abby

I started in 6th grade and I'm a
freshmen now. I wish my school would have started back in 4th or 5th grade or
emphasized more on recorders than they did.

Heh, though we did start in 5th
grade, we had no recorder experience at all, or, at least, I didn't. But I'm
kinda glad, because then I may have wanted to play a reed instrument and not the
flute and I don't think I'd be as happy if I started on any other instrument.
I love the flute dearly, but I would like to learn other instruments, I can make
sounds out of oboes and english horns and brass instruments, but I can only play
a one octave scale on one other instrument and that's a clarinet! LOL, oh well,
I can play some guitar chords and if I try hard enough, I can almost play one
hand on the piano, hehehe, bye! -Abby

How did you get into flute playing?
Well, I am in my second year of
college, and I have been playing since the 6th grade. So, it will be 9 years
that I have been playing flute starting in August 2003. It's a long time to be
playing an instrument. I continue to play flute mainly because of a calling I
believe I have received. I play my flute a LOT in church. Every opportunity to
play that I have, I take it. The more practical application I have, the more I
love my flute. I believe that it is my spiritual gift to share music in praise
and worship. One of my most rewarding experiences with Flute was a concert I
went to two weeks ago in Danville, KY. Sir James Galway was a featured performer
at Centre College, and a group of us flute players (6 of us) were allowed to
miss Wind Ensemble to go to the concert. After the concert (which was
*astounding*), we were able to go backstage and meet Sir James. He signed my
practice journal. ::big cheesy grin:: We then heard about the Master Class the
next day, and when we all came back for that, we sat in the front row. We we
asked to demonstrate standing position while he tweaked it a little bit in front
of everyone (there were about 50-60 other flute players in the room), and it was
such a rewarding experience. It kind of renewed my flute outlook in lessons. I
recently purchased a Gemeinhardt 33SB (last Tuesday, actually!), and this flute
will probably be the last flute I purchase in my lifetime.

That's great! I acually talked to
my parents today about double majoring and they said yes!! I'm going to be a
music major too!!!! I can't wait!!! I love music, and I'm so excited I could
cry! I hope everything works out for you and your church ensemble, that sounds
like fun! I sounded the shofar (a rams horn played like a brass instrument) for
my temple and almost played some flute solos, but I was too busy to play them. I
love this! Sorry if my enthusiasm is annoying, I'm just really happy. -Abby

How did you get into flute playing?
I always enjoy seeing how people
began their musical studies and how it has effected their lives. Like many, I
started flute in fifth grade, but had studied piano since I was six. I loved
playing flute in band and picked up piccolo fairly quickly and enjoyed being
able to play all the high notes and being able to be heard. I continued my
studies through high school and played in several youth orchestras and pits for
musicals in my city. I had the opportunity to travel all over the world three
summers in high school with my youth orchestra, and I knew that there was
nothing else that I wanted to do. I've experienced more than a dozen auditions
and about the same number of rejections. It's built in me a huge sense of drive
and perseverence. I know that whatever I want to do I'll be able to succeed.
I'm currently a junior in college studying at Cincinnati Conservatory. It has
not been an easy journey, but I've learned so much, and have no regrets!!

I've always adored the flute. I
started playing the summer before seventh (typical here abouts). I'm now in
tenth grade and my life revolves around music. I want to have a job in music
which I grow up - performing, teaching, composing... something like that. Maybe
all three.

How did you get into flute playing?
Like most others, I started playing
flute in 4th grade and played through my senior year in high school. I got away
from my music for a while, (aprx. 15 years or so) and just took it up again
about 2 1/2 to 3 years ago. I am now 37 and I get so much out of my music now
more than I ever did. I play for my church. It is very rewarding and relaxing. I
will play for as long as I possibly can. I have a wonderful pianist who helped
nursemaid me, and continues, when I try some of the harder things. I recently
did an accompinant flute part to a song called "On Eagles Wings" with our choir
singing. THis is the most beautiful song I have ever heard!! I've also done a
few solos with piano accomp. For those who are looking for some good church
music (flute and piano) the name of the book is "The Sacrad Flute Soloist".
There are some very nice pieces in this book. I recently did "When Peace Like a
River" and it is beautiful too. I had people tell me they had tears in their
eyes when I played this song. Well enough history. Good luck!!! and have fun
with it. No matter how old you are, you will never be too old to relearn your
instrument. Better yet, don't EVER give it up! Jackie

How did you get into flute playing?
Hi, I started in 7th grade which
seems late, but to us it was perfect timing. I have been playing flute for 6
years now and I adore it. Although my school started in 7th grade I am at a
great level for my age and experience, I suppose. This fall I'll be starting my
music ed. degree with Applied flute. I'm soo excited because music means so
much to me. I play piccolo too which I love as much as playing flute. Who knew
that these two little instruments could make you so happy?!
