I believe 5's are reserved for modern music employing extended effects and unusual notation.

The 5s are by such composers as Robert Dick, Larsen, some Fukushima, Will Offermans, mostly contemporary and almost always unaccompanied. The Berio Sequenza is only a 4(!?!). The Ibert concerto, Prokofiev sonata, Liebermann's big pieces, and a couple of the French things are 4s, and most of the standard rep into the late-middle 20th century is considered a 3. Our technical bar just keeps climbing--imagine where it'll be in 20 more years!?. :D

Soon they'll have to have those robotic flute players to handle what composers'll be writing.

I know! I've read that, and watched the anthropomorphic flutists evolve....they're getting better, but still aren't anywhere close to where they would need to be to replace humans. I still think it's amazing that they could build a robot to play flute!

I know. I am just glad, that they probably wont replace us in our lifetime. Because, they still are sub-par. And once they are good enough, they will still cost a fortune. So, by the time they are cheap enough, we probably wont be around.

I shudder at the thought -- I hate contemporary music! Even the harmonic note at the end of Ibert Concerto, Movt. 2, gives me the heebie-jeebies!

(ducks)

Random funny story -- In college, on a practice chemistry exam, we had to calculate the density of platinum. It took me all of three seconds to write down "21.5" with a huge flourish! :lol:

:? :::sigh:::

Well, I guess for all practical reasons it should be called 21.5

I mean you dont hear people say the math number 'Pi" as 3.14159265358979.........

They just say Pi. :wink:

Another funny math story. Absolutely no relation to the flute, but ties into Pi. Any math geeks out there will appreciate.

I had a HS friend who started college determined to graduate with an average of "Pi." Not because he thought that a 3.14 was the best he could do. He just thought it'd be increadibly cool to graduate with a "Pi" average. (Yes, science geeks, the whole lot of us.)

Anyway, when he realized that "Pi" wasn't going to happen, he decided to buckle down and shoot for "e", instead. Came pretty close to it, as I recall.
