First -- Merry Christmas and/or Happy Holidays to anyone who happens to be on the board today. The only reason I am is that I'm not feeling well (I have a myriad of back/spine probs, several surgeries, etc.) and waiting on family to arrive for Christmas lunch.
I know we've about beaten this horse to death, but I had one comment that I forgot to make pertaining to "off the beaten path" audition repertoire. I guess it will be in the eventual FAQ if I can ever get around to it. And this advice goes beyond just auditioning.
Have a flute alone piece in your back pocket at all times; one that you can pull out an a moment's notice. Examples include, but are certainly not limited to, Bozza Image, Syrinx (I know it's not off the beaten path, but shows shows so much about a flutist, especially if you can just do it from memory; very impressive to an audition committee, I think); Karg-Elert Sonate Appassionata, a Pagannini Caprice transcription, etc. (there are plenty of other alternatives, but you see my point, hopefully ). These are great for unexpected encores, and also if -- as we've discussed here -- you get a vibe in an audition that something somewhat "different" might be in order. Obviously, this would most likely be a spur of the moment type thing. For me, it was the Bozza Image. Not too long, and shows about everything you can show about the flute in a brief period of time (technique, expression, ability to change tone color) that are or should be important to music enthusiasts whether they are audience members or judges. Plus, IMHO, it's just a great piece of music.
Just a thought I wanted to pass along. It has helped me in the past, and hopefully will for others.
