Fantaisie- Faure

so with everything crammed up this month, for the solo competition next month i've decided to play Faure's fantaisie

i'm sure many of you have played this piece, tell me your opinions! thanks

IMO, one of those "can't go wrong with it" pieces for a competition depending on the level of competition (most of the French standards fall into this category). Maybe you might clarify what type of competition this is (i.e. is it one for high schoolers, college, open to any age, etc.), and whether you will have an accompanist? Some these wonderful pieces don't come off as great unless you have an accompanist, and one with whom you will be able to have adequate rehearsal time.

I would recommend this piece for any type junior high / high school -- intermediate level competition (but not necessarily limited to that type of competition either). It's a wonderful piece of music and, when played successfully, can show off many attributes in a flutist. If this is a more advanced competition, I might choose something a little more challenging (but the Faure has plenty of difficulties in it

; in both the "slow" and "fast" part).

This is for a high school competition, because the competition is coming up in less than a month I've decided to work on this piece; I had been working on all-state materials lately so i never got to work on the solo. hopefully this will go well, thanx!

I think it's a good piece for that, then. It's beautiful, quite challenging in several respects musically, and every flutist should treat themselves to learning it at some point anyway

hey thank you for all the comments! ive been working with my teacher on this piece for 2 weeks now, shes telling me to double tongue on the piece, and im still working on that..any suggestions for perfect, light, fast, clean double tonguings?

It really helps to learn your scales double tongued. Then, when you are double tongueing in the piece, it isnt about keeping the articulations staccato, but rather clean. When double tongueing, you should feel that there is some connection/ flow between the notes. Dont clip the notes, because when you double tongue, usually they sound staccato enough. Just make sure that you start slow, then work it up to tempo, and make sure that every note has substance to it.

I took this piece to my teacher this week and it seems that whilst most high school flautists will play this as an intermediate standard piece, which is acceptable, there is so much more that can be done with this piece and to play effectively and with a new approach is a very difficult thing.

I'm playing this for solo festival too!
all I can recommend is extra work on double tonguing...the allegro movement really shines when you can flawlessly articulate at a quick tempo

Many people rate this as an intermediate. But I feel it really is advanced. The tempo really moves in thhe allegro and some of the chords are a bit difficult to hear and nail. For me it was a little hard to coordinate with the piano. But it really does go eaiser the faster the tempo is. I know that sounds wierd but its true. If you get it fast, coordinating with accomp. will be a breeze. Best of luck!

hey. i'm playing it now too. It's not do difficult to learn to play it, but you have to give your emotions into it. and the breathing must be perfect in the first part. i recomend you listening to irena grafenauer. she plays it perfect!
i'm going to play it for my entrance examinations in june.
if u want to play it fast, u have to learn it slowly first. don't even try to play it fast in the begining cause u will mess everything later. and double tonging is very easy. it has to come naturally. practice legato and then add some tong.

i'm playing this piece for a competition in a couple weeks... is it going to completely suck if i can't double tongue?
