I would guess the overwhelming number of people who
start on the piccolo already play the flute. So starting on the pic without that
advantage would seem to double the frustration and possibility of failure. If
you can play the flute there is a very good chance you can play the pic and your
not risking as much buying one. My advice is if at all possible travel to the
nearest city that has a decent size music store and try out some pic's and see
if they will rent you one. Failing that, I am not a believer in cheap flutes or
piccolos. They don't stay in tune and need more repairs and many aren't made
well enough to even spend repair money on and are almost throw away quality.
Others may see this differently. Try used. There are several internet sites that
sell used.[:0]

i agree with penny. it's better to invest in an
instrument that will have less problems in the future than to not invest and
have to put more money down just to have it fixed and maintained. after working
in a music store for 3 and a half years, i've seen and had to deal with many
upset customers who find out that their instrument isn't good and won't hold
up because they bought the cheapest instrument possible. look into woodwind and
brasswind, they're online and you can just put that into a search engine and
it'll bring up their store. they'll send instruments out for you to try. good
luck

I also was shopping piccolo and talked with Music 123
over the weekend Gem 4SP 419 list 880 4SH 449 list 940 4S 509 list 1075 Didn't
ask about the plastic models and the wood are about double. Unlike their flutes,
I have heard very good things about Gemmy Pics. I will probably call Fluteworld
today and check their prices which should be very close to Music123. Local
retail is about $100 higher than online sources. Not sure if more silver in a
piccolo adds more resonance and a more solid sound like it does with a flute but
the added silver isn't nearly as big a price increase either.[] THE
PICCOLO is EVIL[] <G> BTW Music123 claims to have a 45 day no charge
return policy where you only lose shipping charges, both ways of course about
$20 total. I beleive Fluteworld is 10 days to try out.
