Suzuki FL-SC- Anyone got any info?

Hello people of the Fluteland forums. I was google-searching a bit on the topic of flutes and I came across this forum here. Figured it was a good place to sate my curiosity.

My mom and I have been planning on buying a new flute. The one we have is this really, really old Artley (I'm pretty sure they don't even make flutes anymore) and it's degraded so much that I can't get any high notes out of it, three of the notes don't work at all, and D won't play low no matter how hard you try.

So, we aren't looking for anything particularly fancy, but I was simply curious. I found on Amazon a certain Suzuki FL-SC, and they have two new ones for $180. That's about in our price range, and people seem to speak well of them in the reviews, but frankly I don't trust those as far as I can throw them on a site like Amazon.

Does anyone own this flute or any Suzuki flutes, or know anyone who does? I'd just like to get an idea what to expect from it.

I think this is one of the flutes that are made from softer metal...like the First Act flutes and other ones that you find in large generic retail stores. One of my students bought one as a "school flute" and she keeps her other one at home. She doesn't seem to have problems with its playing condition...however, if it breaks she knows that most music stores will not do repairs on it...at least in our area. They are afraid to work with the flutes that have such soft, thin metal...they can break easily. So, in summary...some play fine, however they will be difficult or impossible to find someone to do repairs on them when the time comes. It would be better, in my opinion, to go with a used flute that is a more known brand...or maybe take the money you would spend on the flute and repair the one you have now.

Hmm. I see. Thanks for the info.

I'll try hunting down a deal on a different brand. One thing I forgot to mention is my current flute had been fixed up by my music teacher's father (For free, I might add. It was nice of him.) but I don't really know what kind of work he did on it. All I know is it's the only reason it works in the first place.

If I can't find a different brand flute that's either new or used and in good condition, I may wind up going with the Suzuki anyways, because once I get a new flute I'm sure as heck going to treat it like a new born baby. @_@
