Both are "Intermediate" level flutes with silver headjoints. I'm looking to purchase one as a second flute. Does anyone own one of these flutes (or has owned one) that can tell me what you like/dislike about them?

Yamaha 381 or Emerson ELD

Both are pretty solid flutes. I tend to lean toward Emersons, but that is not the general rule for everyone. I am not a huge Yamaha fan because I don't like how I sound on them, though they are fantastic flutes.
The Emerson ELD flutes are (I believe) special edition flutes released to certain dealers. I like them for students and play on one as a second myself. My second is one that I share with my sister and we dubbed it the "ugly flute" because the plating is worn pretty bad. It plays great, so we could care less.
The Yamaha is a fav among students in many places. I recommend that my students try it as part of the process when upgrading, but for some reason, they rarely choose it over others. They are very well built flutes and I have seen very few mechanical issues from them. Yamaha tends to have a knack for that.

Yamahas are cool, but until you get into the 500 series, pound for pound, you will get more for your money with other brands. There is not much difference between the 281, and the 381. They even have the same headjoint. If you wind up with a Yamaha, you will have a good solid flute. However Yamaha is very prowd of their student models!
I do not know much about the Emerson ELD, but I do know I like the Emerson EF6S WAY better than the Yamaha 381. I think the headjoint on the Emerson alone will take you farther than the CY headjoint on the Yamaha.
This is only my PERSONAL opinion. Your mileage may vary!

I personally own a yamaha 381, and it's a pretty decent flute. I had to adjust the spring tension and shim some pads shortly after purchasing it to really get the most out of it though. My only complaint is that the machine-cut CY is very limiting.
I'd say, go for the one with the best headjoint for you. They're both good flutes, and if you do get the yamaha, you might want to get a lower end model, just as Phineas said, they really are pretty much the same until you get to the 500 series.
And also consider that you can also have the flute's feel adjusted to better suit your preferences.
