just started playing again

Post by fl0utist »

Hi there, I played flute in school band for 6 years then dropped it 2 years ago because I didn't have any time, but now that I have time I want to pick it up again.

However, since I have barely touched my flute for 2 years, I lack any semblance of an embochure and can't even spit out a proper 3-octave chromatic scale

I'll definitely be practicing my overtones and scales; I also have all my old band music as well as some books I never really got through. What else should I be doing? (lessons with a teacher are currently not an option for logistical reasons)

Also, if it makes a difference, I played on a Selmer student flute for 4 years then upgraded to a Trevor J. James Cantabile II

Sorry for the novel, and thanks in advance!

Just play!

If you already knew how to play before, and you know how you want to sound, it will all come back to you. One quick way to get your chops back is record yourself. This is the best to diagnose what part of your playing needs correcting. Just keep practicing and listening to yourself until you get the desired result.

All you need is some practice time. If you need to work on a given regiter, the find excercises/pieces that will force you to play in that register.

You can get more information by reading "Section 7 Practice Questions and Tips" in the Flute FAQ located here.
