John Rutter - Suite Antique

Post by fishtap »

Has anybody mastered this piece? I'm stuck on the final movement, at the final few bars (typical - I can play it all up to there!). I can't figure out how to play those turns that quickly - it's in the third octave, a b a g a b a g a b a g a b a! It just seems pretty impossible to me, as it is played super fast. Does anybody know any secret trill fingering to help me out here?

I'm an amateur and have no where near "mastered" it, but I just play the A-B trill fingering and standard G fingering.

In case you need it, the A-B trill fingering can be found here: http://www.wfg.woodwind.org/flute/fl_tr2_3.html

You have two choices with the final part of the last movment of suite antique.
You can either slow it right down and practice playing those notes slowly, and then gradually speed it up,
or
the way I did it was to play a b a g a b a g a b a g a b a, but with the lower octave fingerings, just injecting more air into it so it goes up an octave, and just hope that your playing it at speed so people wont notice. It doesnt sound great, but its better than taking it down an octave or letting it stop you playing the piece.
There is also a cheat fingering which I once knew, but i forgot it, sorry! :P
Hope this can be of some help.

Sorry to resurrect a very old thread, but does anybody have good alternate fingerings for m. 73-86 in the last movement? Not all of them are equally difficult, but playing them in sequence at the required speed seems to always throw me off. Perhaps I just need to practice it more with correct fingerings :-).

Anyway, I was just curious if anybody has used any alternate fingerings in this passage.

Thanks.
