Doug Tipple (simple system flute maker) with new embouchure!

Post by Jaded »

I just got word from Mr. Doug Tipple (dougsflutes@gmail.com) that he is moving to a new embouchure design:

"I haven't mentioned this yet at my website. My newest embouchure design is a larger oval shape. It is more time-consuming to cut by hand, but it makes for a more powerful flute. I think that it also should be easier for beginners to master. I am working with a good musician in Wales on embouchure designs."

I understand that he believes he can offers some options to increase volume and/or ease of play. I wonder if he'll have them done by Christmas? Either way, he's got some fine flutes already on the market at his web site now (two and three piece, simple system flutes all under $100).

Just thought I'd let others with an interest in simple system, PVC flutes know about this. Getting the embouchure right is a hallmark of fine flute making (and playing). I believe Mr. Tipple even offers a version with a lip plate. My (plateless) flute is now providing many hours of fun as I seek to improvise versions of "Linus and Lucy", "Star Wars Main Theme", "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", "The Pink Panther", "Christmas Time is Here", "Silent Night". You know, I think you can even play Irish traditional music on this thing (e.g. "The Sailor's Wife").

Its such a pleasure to play one of these when you reach the point with your embouchure that you can create that hard, low D note reliably. Now if I can just figure out how to play "Mood Indigo" in the key of D. Hmmm.....

Yep, I made a PVC flute a few years ago. It would freak people out, because I could get an almost metalic tone out of it.

So did I. You can see it on the far right of my avatar picture...

Before I cut the embouchure hole, I used calipers to measure the dimensions of my Muramatsu embouchure. I used those measurements to layout the embouchure hole on my PVC flute. I even undercut it for a better response.

Doug Tipple's Flutes

Post by Jaded »

Mine sounds warm and wooden (low D). I think Mr. Tipple's flutes are quite unique. He's certainly pushing the evolution of the simple system flute to a new level! I look forward to seeing what people say about his new embouchure. I suspect he may perfect it to the point of being able to deal with individual embouchure issues, given his focus. I understand he's got some prototypes going out for feedback on various embouchure designs.
