ANY IDEAS?

Post by MHS_picc »

I play piccolo in marching band. I have recently noticed that my notes are unfocused. After looking at myself playing in the mirror, i have seen that i play out of the corner of my mouth. I have tried to change the position of my mouth but i havent been able to. Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

My flute teacher tells me its just a matter of breaking the bad habit. Just gotta force yourself not to.

I have seen pros playing out the side of their mouth. I think James Galway has even said that his embochure has changed over the years. If you get a good tone. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Some of the top flutists play out the side of their mouth. Case in point - Jean-Pierre Rampal:

There's a good closeup at about 20-25 seconds into the video and you can clearly see him playing out of the left side of his mouth.

I love this guy and he has a strange embouchure.

He plays out of the side of his mouth and at an angle.
