Prima Sankyo
Does anyone know the history of the Prima Sankyo Flute company? I know that the original name was Prima Sankyo and now has changed to just Sankyo, but I don't know when or why it was changed. I did do a search on Google but couldn't find anything about it. I'm just curious.
Anybody? Thanks!

I always thought that "Prima" was a Sankyo flute model/series. I remember trying one out when I was in Japan. It is a great flute!

It's my knowledge that Sankyo is the manufacturer of the flutes. The company was founded by three japanese makers in 1968.
Prima Gakki is the biggest dealer of Sankyo flutes (and many other brands) in Japan, and for that reason they have the habit of including their names into the Sankyo flute markings. They don't acctually make instruments but are responsible for distributing Sankyo flutes around the world.
At least that was the story I've heard from the dealer that sold me my Sankyo. He used to do business with Prima Gakki.

sankyo in japan is still known as prima sankyo, the prima just refers to the group that sankyo belongs to if you look at prima gakki online the website it has all the other brands of musical instruments that are incorporated under the name of prima.
Some of the other prima brands are the following:
Yanagisawa Saxophones
Getzen brass
Akatea
Archet
Pygmalius - strings
The gakki part by the way refers to the word shop.
Hope this helps!

I know this is gushing, but I LOVE my Prima Sankyo! I never knew that playing could be so effortless -- even 27 years old, this flute feels like it plays itself. I used to struggle with the usual problem notes (high E, F#, A flat etc) and when I picked up the Sankyo for the first time, I just soared through the whole octaves. Sometimes I am bummed out and depressed, and then I go play my flute for a while and end up smiling! My daughter laughs at me because EVERY time I play the Sankyo I come in and tell her how much I love the flute. EVERY time! I'm being silly, but I really love this flute......

I have to agree I love both my sankyo instruments having two of them makes me doubly happy
When I tired the sankyo 601 in japan i thought that instrument was well above my skills to play but even at that level it was effortless playing shame I couldn't afford to buy it
