Lessons for advanced player?

Post by nelliecat92 »

Hi, I wondered if anyone could give me advice on flute lessons.

I am an advanced player (ABRSM grade 8 distinction, now working beyond this level) who has benefitted from subsidised lessons at school. I've made the very difficult decision NOT to study flute at university, but really want to keep my playing at the same level, and continue to improve.

So... should I continue to take flute lessons when I move away, bearing in mind financial restrictions and university workload? Or is it possible to self-teach from this level?

Advice much appreciated :) xx

Depending on the university, flute lessons might be included in the tuition. I was not a flute major but still took lessons without any additional charge. I even got a credit each semester for it!

I continue to take flute lessons to this day, though only once or twice a month. That forces me to practice, which helps to maintain my playing ability. Otherwise, I don't think I would be able to play as well as I currently do. Of course, if I wasn't able to afford lessons I wouldn't take them.
