Engraving design
As some of you may already know, I'm shopping for a new flute right now. I was just wondering about whether or not to get the lip plate engraved. I've done a google image search and some of them are really beautiful. It seems that a lot of people get a scroll design or flowers and vines. I saw one unique one that was a butterfly. So, do any of you have your lip plate engraved? If so, what design did you get? Can you post some pics please? Thanks, wonderful forum people!

I use a local artist. A few years back, I went out on a limb and had him do butterflies all over my Haynes flute. It is absolutely beautiful! I wouldn't recommend it to many people because it is a huge risk, in many ways, but by the time I had it done, I knew for sure that I would keep the flute. It was also kind of a way for me to make it my own. Sorta like a tattoo, can't be removed once it is done.
I will try to post pics. My camera has never done it justice. Unfortunately, the artist is no longer taking engraving work. It's a shame because I have another flute I would like engraved. I may check into the company cflutist recommended.

Steve Lindsay used to do the engraving for Brannen-Cooper.

Unfortunately, his site indicates that he is not currently taking additional engraving work.

I have a leaf/vine engraving on my lip plate, I'll post a pic after I take a picture laterasoalin wrote:Does the engraving really help by preventing slipping? I've heard people say this. Or is it more decorative?
I had heard that as well but thought it was just made up. However, after playing on mine for four years I got a back-up flute (for playing outdoors and other less favorable conditions) which did not have an engraving. I did notice right away it felt extremely different and is slightly more prone to slipping. Definitely not something which can't be dealt with, but it did surprise me that there might be something to this

My flute is a Gemeinhardt KGM. I personally love it, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a flute but doesn't have the money to go over $3,000. Though I would also say definitely try it out first, they seem to vary quite drastically. My flute teacher in college loves how I sound on it and told me not to replace it until I could afford to get something along the lines of a Brannen. However, one of the other girls who went to school with me also had one, but she could not get the effects out of it I could and quickly replaced it with an Amadeus. I also played hers once and it was horrible lol.
But that is why everyone always says try before you buy
*Edit- I originally put the actual picture here but it was gigantic. So I instead put in a link to the picture

Beautiful! Thanks for sharing
I'm probably getting a Miyazawa soon (trying it out in a week or so). They only do one design, but I think it's really pretty. You can see it here:

I was going back and forth on getting the Miyazawa engraving or getting it done somewhere else so I can have more options on the design. Still don't know.

I love the Miyazawa engraving pattern. If I ever happen to have $250-300 to just... splurge with, it is towards the top of my list.asoalin wrote:Beautiful! Thanks for sharing

@fluteguy18...I just found your post from 2007 when you posted the specs on your new Miyazawa, and it is nearly the exact flute I am getting in about a week! I tried out the same model a couple of years ago, but then decided to wait on the purchase. I tried Pearl and Sankyo, but neither felt right. The Miya was perfect for me! So, now I'm getting one again as a trial, but will probably keep it (if it's like I remember). I'm getting all the same options as you did, just not sure on the headjoint. They're sending me a few to try w/ different cuts and risers. I'm beyond excited! I've had the same flute since middle school...and nickel Selmer Bundy closed-hole, c-foot..just the basics. So, this is a huge step up for me!
