For all those who don''t know him - here is a flute player
to check out: Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull. He is one of my favorites and I
learned a lot from him, especially the singing into the flute while playing
part, which he does probably better than anybody else. He is the first and
probably only one to succesfully integrate the flute in Rock music. I thought he
would be especially interesting to Willy, since you seem to lean to that style
of music and approach. Ian Anderson never took any lessons or even looked at any
fingering charts. It was interesting what he said in an interview a few years
ago - somebody just showed him the flute fingerings and he said he has been
playing them all wrong for the past 30 years. Well, he still managed to sound
good. Not that he would make it as a classical flutist or even a Jazz flutist by
todays standars, but, music is music, it comes from within and he''s got
it.

I saw him in concert a couple of years ago. He is absolutely
amazing to watch up on stage. He does amazing things with the flute. I am
surprised to learn he never took lessons or knew how to finger the notes
correctly...it's very encouraging. []

i saw him not more than a month or two ago. definitly
awesome. since im only 14 id never heard of jethro tull, but my brother got me
tickets to see just him perform because my brother works at the place he was
performing in. i had really close seats and he came and played right next to me.
if you havent heard him, you definitly sound. its not the kind of "great" that a
classical flute player would think is great, but he definitly is a really
awesome player.

Wow, I'd love to see him in concert. Actually I think I'll
see if he's playing near me any time soon. I've heard him in Jethro Tull, and
I have this amazing record of his, maybe some of you have it, it's called
"Divinities--12 dances with God." It's an awesome CD, really showcases his
talent.
Cheers,
Emily

My old man was a big Tull fan, all the albums and saw em in
concert a few times. He said Ian Anderson bit the shark years ago. Said he went
to his concert last year and he really sucked. Tryin to rock when your like 80
dont cut it.

Actually, I believe that statement from him about not taking
any lessons came a few years before recording "Divinities--12 dances with God."
(It is a great album). I think he said he has taken lessons since. His natural
playing still amazes me.

[/quote] FluteDiddy, you really need to stop call everyone old. Ian Anderson is
only 56 years old. They are many great musicians out there that can still out
perform the kid musicians of todays music. You've got to give him credit for
not giving up what he loves and continues to play and tour. The concert I saw
Jethro Tull was great. Sometimes people don't like it because of where the
concert is held. And I found a great band that opened for them The Young
Dubliners, which one of their insturments is the flute.
