a split e mechinism is a special attachment on flutes (usually
on high - end flutes) that allows for the easier reach of... high e... these is
also a high e facilitator which does pretty much the same thing, but in a
different way.. hope that helps [:)]

Actually split e is available on student flutes too, not just
expensive ones. Split e is a high e facilitator and makes up for what some
consider a flaw in the mechanix. Some people like it some hate it.

Split Es are only found on offset-g models. You can actually
see it on the flute. I have a split e-facilitator, which is like a little donut
on the inside of the tone hole.. you can't see it unless you take the flute
apart and look down and through the flute. I guess the split e is supposed to be
better (and cheaper) than a facilitator, but neither are really necessary.

Emily

Sorry but again not true. You can read the recent thread here
that talked about split e. You can indeed get one on an inline. Not all
companies offer it and it is certainly not as common, but it is available on
inline as well.

I just keep redoing this one so it gets back on the front page
so people see it and hopefully reply to it...

kendall, you do not need to do anything to work the split e.
finger high e and look at the keys that are going down. you'll notice that the
lower g key (the one on the right side of the g# key) goes down as well without
pushing the upper g key. that is how a split e works, it puts down that key
automatically to help stabilize the note and pitch. does that make sense? if you
still have your old flute or can look at one without a split e, finger high e on
both the instruments and look at the difference with the lower g key. some
instruments have a function where you can turn the split e on and off. i think
it is usually more common piccolos and it is very obvious. on flutes they
generally try and hide it. but then again, i'm not 100% sure because i do not
have a split e on my flute.

I dont believe a split e can be added after the flute is made
However there are a couple of add on products including the donut which are
supposed to accomplish the same thing and can be added to your flute for under
$100 by most qualified repairmen
