Please recommend me some Beautiful Flute Concertos!

Post by JasonTongRulz »

This is not for playing purposes, this is for listening purposes and possibly if I like it, playing purposes!

This is because I've listened to Mozart's Flute and Harp Concerto in C, Mozart's Flute Concerto in D and G, Mozart's Andante in C, his Rondo in D, Nielsen's Flute Concerto, Carl Reinecke's Flute Concerto, probably over a million times each.

I'm getting kind of worn out from the same concertos over and over again so can you please recommend me some nice Solo/Two Flute + Orchestra pieces!

I especially love pieces that sound Mozartian, or are heavily romantic such as Reinecke.

Or you could also recommend me some nice symphonies! I'm a really big fan of Beethoven's Eroica, as well as Mozart's 40th!

I like Dvorak's 8th symphony (probably because of the Flute solo).

Thank you and I look forward to hearing some refreshing music!

How about any of the great french flute concerti? The Chaminade, the Faure, Gaubert, Hue, etc? Or even some really awesome contemporary concerti like the Ibert or the Jolivet, or even the Liebermann or Prokofiev Sonatas? There are also some really gorgeous flute solos that aren't like concerti at all like Jennifer Higdon's Autumn Reflection or the many great works by Katherine Hoover (Kokopelli or Winter Spirits for example). And then if you get into the totally solo flute work there's tons of great stuff like the CPE Bach Sonata in A minor, the Bach Partita in A Minor, Danse de La Chevre and more. There's also some really great jazz flute stuff out there too.

For orchestral works you simply can't pass up some of the greats like Pines of Rome, Scheherazade, Afternoon of a Faun, any of the Beethoven Symphonies (#6 especially), Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique, etc. The list is endless!

Then you have some really beautiful non-flute music out there too. There's a bottomless supply of beautiful piano works and violin works. I think it is truly impossible to hear every beautiful piece that is ever written. You would die of old age before getting half way through them.

If you like Mozart then you will like Mercadante, he wrote 3 of them D major, E major, e minor. All have been recorded by Galway on one CD.

I like Leopold Hofmann concerto in D that's attributed (wrongly in my opinion...) to Joseph Haydn.

How about John Rutter's Distant Land and his Suite Antique?

Wow! Thank you so much for all your Recommendations!

@fluteguy18

I love the Chaminade! Yes I've listened to the Ibert Concerto! I liked it but not as much as I liked Mozart though! I love Prokofiev's Sonata! Especially the 4th movement! I'll try and find a recording of Jennifer Higdon as well as Katherine Hoover! Thanks for recommending them! Ooh the CPE Bach Sonata, I've played it, I really like it!

OMG THE PINES OF ROME! Our Orchestra is playing that and I'm playing 1st part! Except we have a 45 (?) Bar rest and I hate the slur from B to High Bb it's really scary because you can hear us over the whole orchestra... Yes I love the Prelude to an Afternoon of a Faun, it's so relaxing! I like Beethoven's Symphonies as well!

You're right when there's a bottomless supply of beautiful music! I'll never be able to listen to all of it but I'd sure like to try!

@cflutist

I am listening to the Mercadante now and I love him! I can't find the D Major Concerto but I'm listening to the E minor one and I love it! Thank you so much! It really does sound Mozarty!

Muramatsu's Earth sounds like it would be a very interesting a piece! I'll give it a listen!

Thanks again!

@Zevang

I haven't listened to it yet but I certainly will! Thanks!

@PhlutePharmD

Ah I've listened to his Suite Antique but not Distant Land, I'll definitely give it a listen! Thank you!

EDIT

@cflutist

WOW, EARTH IS SO BEAUTIFUL! I really wish the sheet music was still available!

I personally like the Nielsen Concerto, Gordeli Concerto, and the Piped Piper Fantasy by Corigliano. I believe these concertos are beautiful. You should try these. :)

I love me some good flute concertos. :)
I personally really enjoy the Ibert Concerto and the Khachaturian Concerto. The Khachaturian is originally a violin piece, but Jean Paul Pierre arranged it for flute. It's an amazingly difficult piece, both technically and musically. Keep in mind that the entire piece is approximately 40 minutes long at performance speed, so make sure you have plenty of time to prepare it before attempting to learn it for something. There's a great recording of Denis Bouriakov playing it on Youtube.
