For Music Majors (past & soon to be) a question

Post by Angus »

Teacher states that for flute it is best to apply to at least 10 colleges.

For those of you that have been down this road or are heading there soon, please share the numbers and anything
related to the "adventure" that may be helpful to us or others.

10 sounds pretty overwhelming. We did five or six with our older one when making the rounds last time for music ed,
but that was voice.

We're starting the college visits this fall (Jr year) so we still have some time.

thanks

I applied to 1. Got a scholarship, took it, regretted most of it. Should have applied to more. For grad school on the other hand, I selected the school for the teacher. Best decision I made!

10 seems like quite a few to me, but depending on what level of school your child is applying to it may (or may not) be unreasonable. For my undergraduate I applied to 4 schools and chose the one that gave the most scholarship. I am happy that I did in many ways and unhappy for almost exactly the same reasons. The teacher and I weren't incredibly compatible in terms of playing and learning styles.

For graduate schools I only applied to 3. I had interest in many more, but I visited the teachers, had lessons with them and was able to weed out the ones I wasn't compatible with. Of the schools I applied to I was rejected from one, wait listed on the other and I cancelled my audition at the third one. No Grad School for me. With that being said however I decided to take my career away from the performance aspect of music. It became unhealthy for me. I had only applied to Music Performance programs.
