hay all!
first time here..
Im not a flute player (yet..) but I wish to try my best with a Dizi flute.
I wanna make one from PVC so I have a few Q for those how have one or making flutes:
the only "how to Vids" I'v seen on youtube are about native american flutes..
1- does someone have a holes drill pattern?
2- how do I know the spaces between holes for different tunings?
3- is the flute close or open from the sides?
thanks.

Re: making a dizi (bamboo flute)
This should help get you started:

To make it have the sound of a Dizi, you'll have to add another hole between the embouchure hole and the first finger hole. That is where you apply the flexible Dimo membrane to get the buzzy Dizi type sound. I have a "D" Dizi which equates to a regular flute in the key of A. On mine, the distance between the centers of the embouchure hole and first finger hole is 15.5 mm, and the membrane hole is 8.3 mm from the embouchure hole. If you build your flute in a different key, you'll need to adjust the position of the membrane hole to be about 53.5% of the distance between the embouchure and first finger holes.
If you want an authentic Dizi sound, you'll need to get some real dimo from a Chinese Dizi supplier. I bought mine from Eason. The price is $4.99 for two packs. http://www.eason.com.sg/products/produc ... access.jsp
You can also try using plastic cling wrap for the dimo membrane, but it won't be quite as buzzy as the real thing.
BTW, if you look at my avatar, my Dizi is the next to last and my PVC flute (not a Dizi) is last on the right.
