Yamaha Artists

Post by Morne »

Hi all...

I'm just curious... who out there are Yamaha artists? I currently play a Yamaha and I am just wondering.

Also... as for upgrade to a more intermediate/pre-professional flute...how do Yamaha's compare?
Currently an intermediate Yamaha (silver head, plated body or all silver/plated keys), Powell Sonare and Altus' Azumi are options I am looking at and trying out.

Thanks

Not so sure about Yamaha artists, but as for flutes...

In the intermediate/pre-professional range Yamaha is kind of trailing behind other companies. That is at least the trend I am seeing at the moment. It doesn't mean that they're poor quality but rather they're not as popular in blind playing tests.

Out of what you have listed, the Azumi is trending as the most popular. This I think is because the Sonare line is having some quality control issues right now. If you get a good one, they're really great. But if you don't... you don't. If you're looking in the $1500-2500 USD price range I would also look at a few other brands (Lyric, Amadeus, Trevor James, etc. ).

Mimi Stillman is a Yamaha Featured artist. You can look at the Yamaha website for other artists.

Thanks fluteguy18 for your reply...

I have noticed that Sonare are not doing so well and Azumi is getting some great reviews. Even here in South Korea, Sonare are not that popular. The guy at the flute store recommended them to me but I am skeptical.
Thanks for the advice. I'll check out some other flutes (including Yamaha)... just to be sure. I don't want to upgrade and buy a lemon :p

Cheers!

I play on a Yamaha 684 w/ c# trill which I think is now standard on this model and love it. I remember when I got it I was just dabbling in upgrading my Armstrong 800b to something better and never expected to buy one for a few more months. I tried 4 different flutes, 2 684, 1 500 series and a used Pearl model that was around 3.2k.. the flute I walked out with I knew I had to have and had such am extreme and dark tone that I stand out at every audition I'm a good way. because I have a unique and dark tone that no one elhas at the high-school honor stuff auditions..

As far as pro artists go I don't know any... but I know slot of college kids play on Yamaha 600/700 series..

I would like to ask if anyone can explain Yamaha's story.. they seem to be a Jack of traits and make everything from gold flutes to motorcycles and tubas... how?

Sorry for typos.. I'm on my phone: P

Thanks Alex411. Sorry for the late reply. I only saw the message now...

I am looking at getting a Mura EX and eventually a Yamaha as well in the 600/700 series :)
