Hi, my name is Karen. I started playing when I was 12 and
was fairly serious with it until I started second year university...I was in a
pretty demanding program and something had to give. My flute then sat virtually
unplayed until three years ago when I picked it up again after a looooonnnng
vacation from it. And Flute Diddy, I'm not OLD!![;)]...but am a proud member of
our middle-age flute players group! Home is Toronto, Canada where by day I am a
chartered accountant. My number one fun activity is playing the flute, but I
also do various crafts and spend a lot of time enjoying the outdoors (this time
of year, running, snowshoeing and XC skiing). I'm married to my university
sweetheart and have two dogs. That's about it for me!

hiya! im katherine and i live in the uk. i've played the
flute since i wuz 9 (im 18 nxt week!) and the oboe since i wuz 14...i also play
the piano a bit but mostly so i can get in2 do the uni course i want. im doing
my grade 8 flute in april...for that exam im playin syrinx, the 3rd movement of
the poulenc sonata and the 1st movement of mozarts concerto for flute in g
major...scary stuff! i dnt play the flute in any bands here, its so competitive
and when ppl hear u play the oboe they would prefer u 2 play that in things bcuz
there r so few of us, im principal oboe in the county orchestra and cor anglais
(english horn) person in the county youth wind band. wot i find hard 2 believe
is u guys all seem so good, and yet hardly any of u have lessons! here virtually
no1 is self taught, i've always had a professional flute teacher with lessons
in school and lessons on the oboe in the county music building...is it a money
thing that means ppl start teaching themselves or r there less teachers? my
lessons only cost £7 4 half an hr by myself (the school subsidises them so they
r less expensive) and the school finds the teachers as well! im nt sure how i
found this site lol but im glad i did [:)]

My nickname is Starburst and I've been playing the flute
for about 1 1/2 years (previously playing alto sax for 2 years). I'm in 7th
grade band. My flute is a Gemienhardt (I have another one but it's a no name
company) C foot, closed hole. I love the flute and I love music other interests
of mine are: dancing, soccer, horseback riding.

G'day! I'm two days old on your site. Found it
yesterday when my hubby bought home a flute! First thing I did was go on the net
(Oh, I mean after I thanked him of course)and type in 'flute' on a search.
That lead me to you. And I have to say your advice has been VERY beneficial.
I'm from Australia. I've been playing the flute for 2 days. [] And
I'm one of those 'old' people - 33. I have two dogs, Sam and Tia, my most
beloved Tim (i.e. hubby - highschool sweethearts) and my name is Jenny. I'm a
private piano/keyboard/singing teacher whose favourite hobbies are learning
instruments. I didn't have many lessons as a kid because I was too lazy and
could play by 'ear' (the musicians curse in disguise as a 'gift'). However I
did music in school and then at Uni (I did a Bachelor of Arts in Drama and Music
and a Diploma of Education). Taught myself the recorder, the guitar, the
clarinet. I hope to teach myself the flute now! Wooohoo!! Unbeknownst to my
hubby, I got on the net the other day and ordered a violin. [] Boy am I
going to be busy! I have 27 students and a list of "I wish I could do this"
longer than my husband's arm. (I used him because I'm short). My ultimate goal
is to one day play the cello. By the way Kim, I'm glad you didn't leave this
site because I just replied to a question you asked Whistler about your daughter
playing the keyboard. Hope you've found the post. Happy learning! Happy
playing! Happy being!

Hello again- What do we mean by middle age?? I am
certainly that. I started playing this Xmas like some of you. My family has been
very understanding of the squeaks and squawks so far and hopefully I am getting
better. I have worked in the science field all my life so this is a big
departure. I am also involved with learning Guitar, and active in kayaking,
bicycling, swimming, astronomy. It seems to me that I find a form of "music" in
all those other activities (guitar obviously). I orginally just wanted to "fool"
around with the flute, play a few tunes but now I find that I want a lot more-
it seems to draw me in. I am ordering music sheets like crazy that I can only
hope one day to play- my favorite so far is "Largo" by Dvorak- New World
Symphony, a relative easy play. I definately think a metronome will have to
appear in my house one day. I appreciate everyones enthusiams here at this site
and the diffent perspective a diversity of age groups bring to the flute.

Hi Louisa and welcome! I'm one of the "older" ones
too...I've got you beat by about 10 years! I took up the flute when I was 12
too, played fairly seriously until university, then put it down for a looong
time. I picked it up again about three years ago. I love it even more now than
before and will never put it down again if I can help it. I live in the Toronto,
Canada area.

Guess I never properly introduced myself...I'm Kala and
I'm a senior in high school. I live in the US, in sunny southern
California[:sun:]. I play primarily flute, picc and tenor saxophone (although I
play clarinet when it's called for in jazz...) and my favorite composers are
Debussy and Mozart...although there are TONS of good ones out there.[:)] I've
applied to colleges as a buisness admin major but considering switching to
either Psychobiology or music therapy.[:p] I think one of the coolest things
about this message board is the age diversity. It's so interesting to see how
much some people here know when they're so young, and how people who are middle
aged just desire to learn about music-- I think it's great that everyone can
help everyone out.[]
Haha, this one is my favorite:

Hello, my name is Amanda and I'm fourteen years old.
I'm in the Advanced Band at my middle school and I love it! I've been playing
for three years, ever since the 6th grade. My band is small - it only has 65
people. The funny thing is, we have 12 trumpets and the Beginning Band has over
40! Next year in high school, I hope to be in the wind ensemble (best band) and
stage (jazz) band. I'm learning how to play the trombone now. I've tried out
for all-county and all-district twice during the past two years and I made them
every single time. [] I have a Gemeinhardt and I love it to death.
Well I guess that's all so bye bye lol.

Hi my name is Sara Elizabeth, SaraBeth, for short. I have
been playing flute since I was four and I am now in seventh grade. I curently
play first flute, first chair in my school. I enjoy playing guitar, flute, and
singing in chorus. I play both electric and acoustic guitars, along with an
Armstrong 303B, Armstrong 104, and an Armstrong 204 piccolo. Both of my guitars
are Fenders due to the fact that my parents wanted the best for their "baby".
Same reason for the Armstrong flutes. I also go horseback riding alot in the
summer. I am a very spoiled only child. I love flute and can't understand why
some people hate flute and music.

Hello- My name is Leeanna. After having never picked up
an instrument in my life, I decided to learn to play the flute at the age of 31.
This past thursday I went to a local music store and came home with a
Gemeinhardt 2SP and a method book. Now I am tormenting my partner by repeatedly
playing Hot Cross Buns [::)] . I'll probably start lessons once I move to
another state in July.
Come out,
come out, wherever you are!
