Middle finger right hand raising involuntarily

Post by Old Fraser »

My 5th week in learning the flute and I've got a problem which is posing a problem. It started when I learnt the fingering for Bb. The middle finger of my right hand now rises about 2 inches into the air on most notes, any more and it would be pointing to the heavens . If I concentrate on keeping it down everything else goes all wrong (breathing, embouchere, reading music), if only I could multitask like women can . Any hints on keeping this finger in place would be much appreciated.

If you want to see exactly what I'm doing check out this video on my blog about a mature persons journey in learning the flute.

To make sure I understand you right, you are saying that your finger doesn't stay close to the keys. Rather, there is a gap between your finger and the keys?

If this is the case, mine does it too. I have been playing for 6 years now, and this isn't a problem for me, as long as you can get your finger moving fast enough to close the key when it is needed. This seems to be more of a natural finger position. Unless it interferes with your playing, personally I wouldn't worry about it.
