I am concerned about my tone. I have been listening to flute
recordings recently and some flautists sound as if they are using a technique
other than tonguing or slurring. Need help to identify and then implement.
Anxiously awaiting replies.

try and drop your lower jaw (kinda like opening the inside of your
throat, like hot food in your mouth or the beginning of a yawn) , it helps
improve tone quality, also warm up your flute, (cover all the keys, which is
C1,and breath/blow warm air into the flute) it helps to change from a dull,
hard, lifeless tone to a warm, rich, and flowing sound. try it![] [;)]

Thanks for the answer. There seems to be a technique in addition
to tonguing and slurrng that I am missing also. If you have any suggestions in
the technique area that may enhance, I will gladly try that also.

Hi! I am Lizzie and I am 15 years old and I have been playing the
flute for 4 years now! For your tone, try moving your lips in a different
position and lower you jaw! It always works for me! If you need any help just
post a message!! I'll reply as soon as a can![:)]

I am not sure of what technique you are talking about as there are
so many that I don't know.I am wondering if "chirping" could be what you are
after. My daughter's teacher taught her how to do this. It is when you stop the
air by closing your throat rather than with your tongue. She was taught to do
this using the uh uh uh uh sound. You might want to check out Larry Krantz's
site. He has alot of good information about different techniques and there are
Midi's that you can listen to examples of each. This might just give you a name
for the technique that you are searching for. Good Luck, Kim

Hi again, This link below might be helpful with jazz techniques.
It does give reference also to the Larry Krantz site that I mentioned. When I
reread the site it does say that the techniques are from Robert Dick so I am
thinking that a Google Search using his name might even bring more sites to
check out. http://www.jazz-flute.com/techinque/01/ ... html?tid=2
