Alto flute
Does anyone here play the Alto flute ? Tonight we were at my
daughters flute lesson and the band director that was there brought out a new
alto flute for everyone to try. It certainly was different...it seemed like the
curved head made it a lot easier to play and actually get the notes out. I never
realized that they would be so BIG either. I think the keys were bigger than a
quarter LOL Kim

That's really cool that your daughter got to try an alto
flute. I've only seen pictures though I have read alot about them. The curved
headjoint things seem interesting to me, but obviously some people don't like
it because there are straight headjoints for alto flutes. I would hope that I
sometime would have the privilage of seeing one in reallife! [8)]

Just out of curiosity Kim and Dancingflutist your avatars
don't show up on my computer-- it is my computer? Not that it is a critical
issue but just want to know if I need to update something or other.

Dancingflutist~ The flute was really neat. I only held it
because I guess I was a bit intimidated by the size of it and it really seemed
like work to play when I watched my daughter and her teacher. They seemed to
really need a good ear to play it I am not sure why. This one had both the
straight and curved headjoints using the curved one definitley made the flute
easier to handle. Kim

Hi~ I am not sure why you don't see them. I can see
everybody's... including yours. I am not sure what you would have to
update...maybe we have a computer wiz here that may have an answer. Kim [quote]

One of the members of my flute choir has both an alto and
bass flute on top of her regular C/soprano flute(lots of money tied up in her
instruments, that's for sure!). If you thought the alto flute was big and
heavy, you should see the bass flute! I have tried both, but only briefly. They
both have a wonderful tone...beautiful, eerie, mysterious...all at the same
time. I've actually been trying to rent an alto one, just to try it out for
awhile on my own, but one hasn't yet become available. PS: I can't see Kim's
or Dancingflutist3000's avatars either. I see everyone else's though.

Alto and bass flutes are really cool although I have only
played one for a few minutes. I prefer the bass flute but they cost so much
money! Grr!

I own a Pearl Alto flute and it was one of the best
investments in my life. I use it in the orchestra that i play in and i got it
preety cheap too. I bought mine off of www.wwbw.com i got the pearl alto flute
with the straight headjoint. It doesn't take much air to blow, but it is heavy.
Curved headjoints, in my opinion are easier to hold for those with small hands.
Have fun, and enjoy the chances you can get. ~AJ

i dont play it but ive tried it. its sort of confusing to
figure out what octave u r in. thats how it is w/ the piccolo so u should be
able to pick it up farily easily.

Im playing an Alto flute for my recital coming up. I just
love it! It has such a pretty low sound and sounds very very good in the quartet
in playing in [:)] I've heard that playing with a curved headjoint makes the
playing a bit easier (which make sense b/c it is HUGE!) But im playing it on the
straight head-joint and it is hard, but i got used to it in one lesson...so its
not impossible! []
