Audition- advise on basic piece to play

Post by Milomonkey »

Hi there, I am auditioning for a music therapy course in one month with flute as my second instrument and I need a basic piece to play. I reached Grade. 5 (20 yrs ago) but now not so great. I just need to show I can play something with feeling but I have limited time to learn in so do you have any suggestions? It doesn't have to be long or technical. Would love some advice.
Thanks!

I would love to be able to play this, but it is a bit too hard for me - especially in the time I have. Is there anything a little easier that might work?
thanks so much for the reply!

Try the Suite Antique by John Rutter. It has six movements and at least two of them (Chanson and Aria) are not terribly difficult. It's on the Distant Land recording. Here are YouTube links to those movements:

I have played those and indeed you're right!

In the case of Syrinx, there is no true indication for tempo or speed. The music works more like an improvisation. That's so true that Debussy firstly wrote this peace without any tempo indication nor any bars...
It was up to the editors to give it a "commercial" form with tempo and division with bars.
So, anyway, Bob's suggestion is wonderful and Syrinx would be doable anyway ;-)

How about one of the movements from the Telemann Fantasia ... lots of opportunity for music expression and "feeling" in them, and they are great for solos?
