It doesn't so much change the shape of the pad as to put an impression into the pad's felt cushion. Most cheaper flutes use pads made with soft felt and then put an impression into to pad so that it seals better. The only problem with that approach is that over time, the pads will lose the impression and then begin to leak.

Since the flute plays better without the plugs, it is definitely possible that the one in the F key was not sealing the hole completely. That would also cause the flute to play poorly.

The flute only cost $135. Shall I have my personal secretary locate an expert technician and arrange an appointment, then buzz my chauffeur to drive me over for a consultation?
Do what you like. I don't really give a damn.

Hey Greglee, I hate to call you out like this in the open, but here it goes........

I do not know what kind of message boards you are use to reading, but we do not do this kind of thing here. Most of the people that give advice here are either proficient players or are professionals in the industry who do not have to give advice on here for free. I normally will not sensor anything on here but spam. However, if you post something with this tone again, you will be banned by me. If you knew what you were doing, and wanted to do, then you should not be on here wasting everyone's time.

Also, any hobby or profession comes with a person cost. This could be time or money or both. If you are not willing to pay the price, then do something else. I have purchased cheap instruments with fairly good results. However, a cheap flute has to be in good adjustment to play just like an expensive one. This is the reason why you should spend the money up front, and make sure you have a playable flute if you are not willing to dump money into it to fix it.

Chill and just play the d*** thang!
