Mercadante Theme and Variations Grade 6

Re the List A Mercadante Theme and Variations on a Aria from Otello, can anyone tell me how Mercadante composed variations on an aria from an opera that was written AFTER Mercadante died?????? Mercadante died in 1870, Verdi's Otello was first performed in 1887, but based on Shakespeare's Othello, written around 1603. Am I missing something? :roll:
