Favorite Flute Concertos

Hi all!
The orchestra conductor at my university is putting on a "concerto competition", in which anybody on any instrument can audition a concerto (on their instrument, obviously!). The winner will be featured in a concert playing their concerto with orchestral accompaniment. I think I would like to enter, but I can't seem to think of any other flute concertos except for the Mozart ones (not that there's anything wrong with Mozart--I'd just like a little more of a selection.) Does anybody have any favorite flute concertos?

Mozart is nice, but we've got lots of choices.

Some of my favorites are Ibert, Rodrigo Concerto Pastorale, Liebermann (difficult), Vivaldi D Major (The Goldfinch), Boccherini D major, Griffes Poem, Hanson Serenade, Devienne e minor, Reinecke, Mercadante, Foote A Night Piece, Malcolm Arnold concerto...is there a particular style period you prefer over others? We have a great repertoire--just think--you could be a SAXOPHONIST looking for a concerto lol!

Oh, yeah, there are also nice orchestrations of some sonatas and things. There's one, by the composer, of Bloch's Suite Modale (gorgeous!!!), and a Lenox Berkeley orchestration of the Poulenc Sonata.

Usually, if the word 'concerto' isn't in the title, the words 'for flute and strings (or orchestra)', or something, will be included...

Well, I'm still deciding if I'm going to audition for my college's concerto competition, but I've narrowed down my choices if I do audition. Probably either Griffes' "Poem", Vivaldi (the bird one?) or maybe a Bach concerto...

well, I don't think this post will be much help. but lately I've been listening to khatchatourian's concerto for flute and orchestra, and it is awesome. It sounds exteremely hard though. Melizzard also mentioned Devienne's concerto in E minor and reinecke's sonata in E which are both great pieces..

I agree--the Khatchatourian is awesome!

I also looove the Reinecke, but my current teacher isn't crazy about it. I know I'll play it eventually, just probably not when I'm studying it with her.
I'm really leaning toward Poem, but I'd really like to hear a good recording of it. I currently have two recordings of it in my possession (well okay, I'm borrowing them), one played by Carol Wincenc and the other by Joseph Mariano and I'm not really crazy about either of them. I guess I'm being really picky, but I play a piece soooo much better when I have a good recording to listen to. I like Mariano's sound much better than Carol Wincenc's, but some of his recording is a little hard to hear because of a backround interference (it's a REALLY old recording, originally done on a 78 rpm), though I like Carol's interpretation of the piece better than Mariano's. So...just out of curiousity...does anyone know of any other recordings done of this piece? I'm sure there are more out there, but I'm not quite sure where to start searching.

There is a recording of Alexa Still of New Zealand doing the recording. I don't like her sound or interpretation that much, but the orchestral recording is more modern and sounds better than the other two you mentioned, I have them both.

Of course there's the Chaminade Concertino which is wonderful.. although a little overplayed.. but it's still fun to learn and play.. and a crowd pleaser.

Oh the Chaminade is beautiful - regarding concertos (im only like six months too late

The Quantz is gorgeous, and the Romberg - this is simply stunning, the middle movement is so lyrical - its beautiful! Tons of 'unusual' ones out there - I tend to veer away from the Mozart etc
