Jethro Tull

Post by JTF »

Has anyone heard the amazing flute-playing lead singer of Jethro Tull? Ian Anderson composed most of Jethro Tull's work, and plays the flute himself. He really jams on-stage, and has gotten positive comments by such flutists as Galway and Jeffrey Khaner (of the Philadephia Orchestra). I am a devout Jethro Tull fan, and love most of their music. Does anyone else like Tull?

I haven't listened too much, but my husband keeps trying to get me to play it! There's a book of the Ian Anderson solos, published by Warner Brothers.

i heard him play at a local theater. I read a book about him once, and he never learned the flute fingerings. He just picked up a flute and messed around with it. He is awesome, especially when he "sings" through his flute. I would definitly reccomend listening to him at least once.

One of the albums Ian practically wore out while learning his instrument was "I Talk With The Spirits" by Roland Kirk. In fact, If I remember straight he covered Kirk's "Serenade To A Cuckoo" from that album. Kirk was one of the originals at singing over the mouthpiece. That CD has since been reissued, and it's great.

now that i have the hang of fast fingerings sorta down on flute, i can play (the flute part to) many Tull songs, like Play in Time, Cross Eyed Mary, Thick as a Brick, and the "cocktail-lounge jazz" version of Bouree.

Poke around the website, if you're so inclined, and you can learn more about flutist Ian Anderson. There's a video on the Tull website entitled "Tinkara's flute duet with Ian." Anderson's playing style absolutely breaks convention, and if you see the video, you'll catch his trademark lifting of one leg while playing.

Yea, there's also an awesome clip of Locomotive Breath played live in some bar, and people in the audience playing the melody on kazoos! Its pretty awesome. Instead of Ian singing "No way to slow down," he says, "thats no way to kazoo." its pretty funny.
