You will survive. My band camp schedule used to be:

first two weeks:8-12
Third week:8-6
fourth week:8-12

Now, I have graduated, and I dont do band camp anymore. However, next week The local high school is paying me to be an instructor for the woodwinds. so I have to "work" from 9:30am-11:30am. Band camp next week for them is horrible. they go from 9-9.

You'll feel good about yourself when you've finished!

Wow...8am-8pm is a long time for band camp. Hope it's not too hot out there for you where you live. You'll have fun. My fondest memories of high school are from band/orchestra. "Back in my day" (do I sound like a mom?)...Class of 1986...band camp was 9-12 in the morning and 6-9 at night, for two weeks and we traveled 6 hours to a camp in KY for a week, too. It was hard work, but it paid off. Try to enjoy it...there's always memories to share with your friends afterwards.

Out of curiosity, where did you go to camp in KY?

Actually, we hired people to come to us. We just had it at our high school and got a head start practicing our show. This year ironically, I was hired to teach ($200 dollars a week isn't bad being right out of high school, especially because I only have to be there 3 hours a day)

It was Camp Crescendo...can't remember what city...all I remember is that it seemed like it was in the middle of nowhere. The entire band did not go...it was just us majorettes and the flags...boy, was it hot...I think I lost 10 lbs in one week, and had a great tan from being on those fields 6am-4pm!! I would like to know if it is still there...

ouch! my band camp is from 8-3:30, 5 days a week, for two weeks. I'm sure if we stayed overnight Hamill would make us march from dusk til freaking dawn because he's evil like that! I live in Latrobe Pennsylvania, and the Pittsburgh Steelers stole our local college for training camp (whats the football team doing on the band's field anyway?) so we just go to the highschool every day. There aren't any camps near us that we could hijack for a week or two. Today was our first day... it was nuts. Our "section leader" who just started THIS YEAR (she got it because she's related to one of the music teachers in the school district that our band director is friends with... so stupid) sucks at sectionals. Of course none of us memorized our music over the summer (not a single one out of the hundred or so in the entire band. thats not counting the guard of course... they're not really in the marching BAND is what we've determined) so Hamill gave us an hour and a half in sectionals and said that when we come out we have to be ready to play the entire MEMORIZED piece (no music) AND march with the coordinates we just did that morning. Luckily though, about half way through it started to rain and the woodwinds had a mad dash to the band room :D. After band camp ends we get a week off in which we go to the amusement park in Pittsburgh, screw around all day, then march in a gay parade and go home. Its worth it though. Then school starts the 28th and we have practice every tuesday and thursday from 3:30-5:30. Its going to suck >.<

How is the amusement park there? We did the same thing, except at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio...we had to march right throught the middle of the park (that's when it's fun to be a majorette, in the front row!). I hope my son (8th grade) keeps up the trombone so he can share in all those experiences, too. My daugther (1st grade) says she wants to play flute like Mommy when she's old enough (woo hoo!), but she'll probably change her mind 20 times by then!

Its pretty nice. We march a big path through KennyWood with like 6 other bands from all around the area. Its pretty cool.

When I was little I always wanted to play the flute like my mommy, and I ended up doing it.

Oh and Mr Hamill also decided that we have to memorize the freaking coordinates and then read them off to him! What the hell is with that!? I don't memorize "3.25 steps outside left 25 6 steps inside home hash" and neither does anyone else I've talked to. We just know where we have to go. He makes us all mad :x Mr Hamil --->

Being able to recite the coordinates will pretty much guarantee you know where you're going and hit that spot every time. It may seem like a pain, but in the end, it will probably benefit the group (assuming you buy into it).

Well we were actually considering starting a big rebellion... being like "Hamill if you make us do this me and these 49 other people are quitting.. you can't do the show with half the people. You need us Mr Hamill. Let us just march it out by ourselves instead" haha that would be funny... I don't think it will happen, but if it did I would like throw a party just because.

We don't have time to check the sidelines and that when we're moving, we have to concentrate on Shorty (field conductor... she's short...) and the music and that. Bleh its a pain.

It's unfortunate that you feel the need to rebel against him for (what I am sure is) his desire to improve the group. As someone who served as a section leader for two years and an assistant director for a year (and is now pursuing a degree in Music Education), I understand where he's coming from, and how difficult his job can be, and I just hate to see it made harder for the reason that it's something new that ya'll aren't accustomed to. To improve you have to be able and willing to adapt and change...Try new things and keep what works and then toss what doesn't. Refusing to even try new techniques will only cause stagnation.

If only you could meet him...

Mr Hamil can be a nice... well... thats stretching it too much. He can be a decent guy sometimes, but others he doesn't realize what all we have to do. He expects me and like 4 other people to cross through another line at exactly count four, and then in the other 8 counts that we have left make it like 20 yards. We can't make it, and yet he won't change it so we can step through earlier. It may look better going through on count 4, but if we don't make it where we need to it doesn't look good anyway.

I don't understand how being able to list off some numbers is going to improve our marching : /. I think it would make more sense for us to march it individually for him, and have him tell us what we need to improve. We have two assistant band directors as well, so we could get like a group of 3 people out there from different sections and do 3 at a time. We wouldn't be able to follow each other because chances are that we won't be anywhere near eachother. That would make much more sense.
