Can't hear myself onstage ... suggestions?

Post by seldomseen »

I've started incorporating flute in some of my gigs (folk-rock, with some jazz and blues elements), and it's a big step for me -- harmonica is my primary instrument, and have played that professionally for 20 years. Currently I'm playing flute into a vocal mic, on a stand, with the mic at the headjoint. Lip level. I'm having a real problem hearing myself, though -- I can't at all, and I have no idea if my playing is even accurate. Over the PA I can hear myself humming over the mouthpiece; just not the flute itself. We're using a stripped-down sound system without monitors. Until I score at least a small monitor, are there any suggestions for hearing myself?

move the mic around. Find the best place for you. I sometimes have the same problem, but then I move the mic, and it is instantly better.
