I currently play in a woodwind quintet, a marching band, a Symphonic Band, and Orchestra, a flute ensemble, woodwind choir, Wind Ensemble (the step between symphonic, and orchestra) and something else that I cant remember.

I currently play an Armstrong 303BG, but I will be upgrading very soon.

My dream instrument is a 14k Pearl. I tried one and loved it.
And I think I will be buying one soon. (I need a new flute for college).

I like James Galway (of course). I also Like Tadeu Coelho.

I like the soundtrack music for films. Those pieces are always fun. My current favorite piece is Russian Christmas Music. It is AWESOME! If you havent heard it before, you must look for it, and listen to it.

Flooty Tutty, and Squints (if you're interested), there are TONS of great flute players out there that have recorded albums. Some of my personal favorites are Marcel Moyse, Jean Pierre Rampal, Jeffrey Khaner, Jeanne Baxtresser, Julius Baker, Patrick Gallois, and others. Any recordings by them (or any other major flute player) is likely to be great, and there'll be a ton to learn from hearing them. I hope that some of those suggestions are useful! :)

fg18, wind ensemble's not a "step"! (good-natured shock response) :D Research its history, it's quite its own entity. Start with Frank Battisti, Ithaca High School, 1950. An absolute new concept at the time, a radical departure from the notion of a band as, as one of my wind conductors once called it, "a boatload of winds and percussion". The symphonic band (large sections, multiple players on each part, lush sonority, etc.), the wind ensemble--one player per part, soloistic, and spare, and the orchestra, are ensembles with distinctly different characters and purposes. Apples, oranges, and pears. Not one is 'superior' to the others. In a lot of schools, though, I guess it's easy to mentally create such an heirarchy among them, because that's how the auditions often shake out. Oh, yeah:
1) I play in two regional orchestras, plus chamber music with my husband, and sing in two fine choirs.
2) Old (sweeeeet) Muramatsu, now would be a DS, and Burkhart picc.
3) The new wooden Powell, gold keys--rich and dark, decidedly unwimpy
4) Alexa Still, Goran Marcusson, Rampal, Mariano--my first teacher's teacher (this may be hard to find, but worth it), Julius Baker--my second teacher's teacher, many others
5) One favorite piece? Hmm...a famous flutist (Baker?) once replied, "Whichever one I'm currently practicing.". I understand completely.

Flooty- Russian Christmas Music by Alfred Reed? OMG. If you are playing the WHOLE thing, it must be a huge show. The song alone is over 13 minutes. However, it is probably an arrangement, which is still great. I wish I could see it.....

Yeah, I know that wind ensemble, and orchestra, and all that jazz are completely different, but the way they have it here, it is set up as a sort of hierarchy. the top 3 flutists get into Orchestra, which they have ranked as the 'top' band, the top 2 (or three, it depends on the pieces we are playing) are in Wind Ensemble which is ranked as the 'upper middle' band, and Symphonic Band, and Concert band have been 'ranked' as the lower two. I know it shouldnt be that way, but it is here.

Actually a lot of people here hate wind ensemble, because the music is harder than crap. Whether it is individual runs, or playing well as an ensemble, it is harder than orchestra, so we all hate it. In a piece we are playing right now, the flutes have a 3 note chord (one on each note) that lasts almost a minute and a half, twice throughout the piece.

By the end, we almost fall out of our chairs we are so dizzy.

1) What group do you play for?(college band, marching band, for fun)
No one anymore. :( I do coffee shop gigs with other musician friends around town whenever the need a flautist. I plan on joining the Austin Civic Wind Ensemble when my schedule clears up though. I used to play in a regular ensemble consisting of cello, viola, violin and me for many years, but we've disbanded due to life changes across the board.

2) What kind of flute do you play?
I listed them here:
http://www.fluteland.com/board/viewtopi ... =9426#9426
But, I play on my Gemeinhardt the most, I've discovered.

3)What is your dream flute?
I sorta want my John Lunn back now that I've learned that he isn't making flutes any more..Sniffle...apparently he's gone into writing.

4)What flute players do you enjoy listening to?
Well, of course I love James Galway, but I really enjoy listening to Deepak Ram. He's insanely good at the bansuri which is a type of bamboo flute.

5) What is your favorite type of music to play or favorite piece you have ever played?
I seem to really gravitate to happy baroque music. However, the piece I'm most proud of to have played was back in highschool when I learned and performed the Doppler Fantasie. I was on 10th grade at the time, and it was a little above my technical comfort level, but I worked at it and did quite well in state competition.

Cool poll Flutytooty91--I like the question #4. In fact, I may need to include some of these artists in my upcoming all flutes podcast. :) So it's been helpful for me!

Good grief, what piece are you playing?  I found great reward in the difficulty of wind ensemble literature. Not that orchestra is easy, but it depends on the semester's repertoire. It's not hard to sit in orchestra for two months and play a grand total of, like, twelve minutes. Some of my favorite wind works have been Ives' Variations on America, also his Country Band March, Lincolnshire Posy and other Grainger, Hindemith Symphony for band , Symphonies of Wind Instruments (Stravinsky), Husa's Music for Prague, and works by Copland, Whitacre, Maslanka, and, we'll say "others", 'cause I'm sure I'm missing some. Many of these I was fortunate to become acquainted with through my high school's unbelievable (for its age) wind ensemble, though some I played in college. Also a nifty little piece called Gazebo Dances by John Corigliano, and the Candide and Elsa's Procession transcriptions. And, if a wind piece is really great, someone'll make a transciption for ORCHESTRA of it, LOL. :D

1) What group do you play for?(college band, marching band, for fun)
High school concert band, orchestra, and jazz band and a local area concert band. I try to just do things like concert band for fun . . . I'm planning on being a performance major in college, so I don't get to play "just for fun" a lot.

2) What kind of flute do you play?

Sankyo Silver Sonic

3)What is your dream flute?
Hmm...I'm not really sure. I'd love to try out a Haynes, though. I've never really played any high level instrument besides a Sankyo before, so I don't really know.

4)What flute players do you enjoy listening to?

Emmanuel Pahud, Jeanne Baxtresser, Jean Pierre Rampal, Laurel Zucker

5) What is your favorite type of music to play or favorite piece you have ever played?
I played the Doppler Rigoletto Fantaisie in my junior year of high school for a studio recital with my teacher and that was really cool. One of the pieces I'm working on now is the Martin Ballade and I like that, too . . . so different from anything else I've ever played before.

1) What group?
I am freelance, so I play in everything from Small Classical Ensembles, Rock bands, Funk bands, Latin Groups, all the way up to 1940s style big bands, and small local orchestras.

2) What kind of flute?
http://www.fluteland.com/board/viewtopi ... &start=165
My list is there. I play mostly on the Buffet, and the Pearl 665. However, the Miyazawa is starting to be my favorite.

3)What is your dream flute?
So far, I have not found anything I like to play that is much better than what I have. When I find one, I will let you know :D Playabilty and prefered sound are more important to me than the material it is made out of.

4)What flute players?
Hubert Laws, Dave Valentin, Sam Most, Joe Farrel, Gary Meek, Yuseef Lattif, Rasaan Roland Kirk, Eric Dolphy, Kent Jordan, Nestor Torres, Herbie Mann, Ian Anderson, Bud Shank, Bill Mc Bernie, Sir James, Willy Bennett, Sadao Watanabe, Najee, Phineas Henshaw...Hey thats me!....etc... etc... etc...
I just like flute players period. I learn from the good ones, and the not so good ones. I have always liked what flutes do to a tune/song. Artists like Example Issac Hayes would have not had his sound if he did not have a flute ensemble in his tunes in the early 70s.

5) What is your favorite type of music to play or favorite piece you have ever played?
Brazilian Jazz is my favorite, mainly because of the guitar types, and the chord changes. Here are my favorite top 10 songs to play, corny and easy as they may be.

1. When I Fall In Love(Nat Cole)
2. Spain(Chic Corea)
3. Black Ice (Jeff Lorber)
4. It Happens Everyday (Joe Sample/Wilton Felder)
5. No More Blues(Jobim)
6. Aqua De Berber(Jobim)
7. Mimosa
8. Waltz for Debby(Bill Evans)
9. The World is a Ghetto(War)
10. Red Clay(Freddie Hubbard)

I can play and improvise these tunes in many different types. There are more challenging tunes I play, but they are not as fun as these.

In response to Melizzard's comment, the piece we are playing is entitled Elegy. And, because of the conductor, the llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg note can last anywhere between 45 seconds and almost a minute and a half. It just depends on the expressiveness of everyone else that day, and the parts they are playing.
