---------------- On 9/14/2003
10:57:50 AM It seems that band/section sizes really can vary on school size and
from grade to grade. How many flutes are in your band ? How many band members in
the entire band ? My daughters 7th grade band has 13 flutes and the 7th grade
band has roughly 80 some members altogether. ----------------
Well our
7th grade band is split up in to two bands because of it's size. In all (we
play concerts as a whole) there are about 14 flutes and our band consists of
about 160 people alot lol [:p] .

We don't have a very good mixture of
instruments either... We don't have an even amount of low players (one barry
sax, one tuba, one baritone, and two trombones), but we have about 20- 25
trumpets (all of which are male), 20 clarinets, one french horn, five
percussion.... All in all, we have about 50 members in our whole band. However,
we have a good number of flutes... about 10 in all. Of course, sitting in front
of the saxophones doesn't exactly allow me to be heard.... My band sounds very
much like your daughter's, fluteluversmom.
My
siggy has temporarily disappeared.

My band sounds very similar to
jaccavrie's. I go to a very large high with 4 bands (we dropped our 5th band
this past year). There are 32 flutes in the marching band not including the 6
piccolo players (one of which is me!). I would guess that there are 8 in first
band, 13 in 2nd, 15 in 3rd and right now our fourth band is enitrely freshman,
which I would say has 15 or so. So, about 40 would be the answer to your
question. ~Abby

taytay; i know how you feel!! i just
moved this past summer to a much bigger school, which means a bigger band (yay).
Strangely a bigger band meant a smaller flute section for some reason. I went
from 22 member section to now a marching band w/ 7 flutes...4 of which play
piccolo for marching season (one of which is me []) This was only my
second year of marching; i'm a junior btw. Our show was entitled The New World
Symphony by Dvorak, we just got back from the bands of america competition in
st. petersburg flordia a week ago. We had a great season! we won first place for
music in every competition we went to which in my opinion, is the best award to
win. i think marching band can effect concert season, in wind ensemble our band
director has to keep reminding our brass section that 'this isn't marching
band, your not out on the field, stop covering up the beautiful flute melody you
stupid over playing brass players- don't you know that the flutes are what hold
this band together?!?' ...hmm yeah ...something like that, i don't remember
exactly [::)] btw, this is my first post hi everyone

I attend a small college in KY. We have
the Wind Ensemble, which is made up of about 35-40 students (at most) and a
Chamber Winds group is made up of students in the Wind Ensemble. Chamber Winds
has 4 flutes, two of which play the oboe parts (we don't have an oboeist). Wind
Ensemble has 6 flutes, two of which are on oboe parts mostly. Sometimes the
first four chairs (Music Ed Majors) double on Percussion parts (we only have two
percussionists) for pieces. Cass the Heartnut
