Being a female or a male in music does not matter. However, depending on the circles you are in, there are stigmas behind being a male and a flute player, so there are differences.
Another interesting note is demographics. What is the biggest population of flute players, especially the ones the frequent the board.
I think this thread would make for some interesting results. I do not think it was intended for any sexist purpose at all.

I'm not implying anyone is a sexist, just that, it's 2005 already. I even live in an area rife with stereotypical mindsets (particularly regarding gender roles ), and it seems almost these days to be a nonissue. Pete's Sake, for decades, all orchestral flutists in this country were male!!!!!!!!! Oh, wait, that's right, anyone besides teachers and nurses were male! Almost forgot. One of my old band directors--female--told of another woman's tireless efforts back in the 1970s, to recruit her into membership of the Women Band Director's National Association. She finally explained that she already belonged to the American Bandmaster's Association, comprised of "not men, or women, just people". Anywho, one of my best (attitude, curiosity, intellect) students for a few years (moved away) was a middle school boy. Wonder what he's doing now...

*points to username* Take a wild guess. lol
And I think there's too many things being thrown at male flute players, I have a friend who gave up the flute because he was being call so many things and so much bs was going on that he had too even though he could beat me in any chair test back then. Shh, don't tell my instructor that But if you've got tallent, then no one should slander things against you just because you're a guy. I mean, they couldn't help being born a guy, and frankly, I think the world just needs to grow up some.

I love being overly dramatic.

I've noticed that usually the trumpet players are guys too, but one of my friends is the only girl trumpet player and there are 15 in all.Phineas wrote:MeLizzard

Male
My observation has been that in school, about 95% of flutists were female, but on the professional level the ratio definitely shifts.
As to the stigma of being a male flutist while in school... yeah let them laugh. Ladies dig flutists It is an instrument that is played with a kiss.
