Some choral directors prefer their singers to use vibrato, and some do not. Personally, I do when I am working with my more accomplished singers (I teach middle school chorus as well as flute).
I did not truly understand the correct concept of flute vibrato until I started studying voice, even though I had several flute teachers before that. I feel that they are very similar in character and technique. You do need to be able to turn it on and off thoug, especially when you are tuning your flute or singing pieces from certain styles. That comes with practice and relaxing your throat as much as possible. Make sure that your vibrato is not coming from your throat, and you should be able to control it in no time!
