Help with alto flutes?

Post by flutegeek1992 »

So, I'm starting a flute choir and originally we we're going to use my flute teacher's flutes. Long story short-the deal fell through. Does anyone know where I can find a cheap, good-quality alto flute/bass flute? Or where I can rent some? I haven't called around locally yet, but I doubt that they have one around here. Any help is appreciated. We can't afford to buy expensive ones (we will be fundraising the money for these).

Cheap and good quality are rarely synonymous in the flute world, and the same holds true for altos. Just about the cheapest altos I would ever suggest run in the $1500+ price range new. If you can find them used, the price might come down to 1000-1200 USD, but that's still not exactly cheap. Among these altos are Jupiter, Emerson, Brio, Sonare, Pearl, and Trevor James. Unfortunately, most shops that rent instruments don't rent altos and basses, as they have such low demand that they're not worth the storage space to have around. You may have to settle with C flutes for now until you can fundraise or find someone willing to lend you their harmony flutes.

I think you can rent them at JL Smith and Co. When I was in high school we rented an alto for a musical. I think it was like $50 or 60 per month...back then! Worth checking though!
