Low Notes = High ARRRRR Somebody help!
Hello all. As many of you know I am brand
new to the flute and i''ve been teaching myself. Now here is my problem. Any
low notes I play *such as low C* comes out High rather than low. Sometimes I can
get the pitch down for like 2 seconds and it turns around goes high
again.........How in the world do I fix this? I''m lost! Any help would be
much appreciated! Thank You!!!!!! Marcia[:sun:]

Hey Marcia! I had the same
problem when I first started out. Don't worry- you will get it eventually! [:)]
What I was told to do was have a more relaxed embouchure, and think about
opening your throat to have a thicker, steadier air stream. This helped me out a
lot. A low C was the hardest note for me to learn (so far!) and this technique
helped me out a lot. It may take a while just to hit the note, but once you hit
it, remember what position your lips were in, how hard or soft you were blowing,
etc. Try to mimick that position everytime you play the low note. Soon you'll
be able to hit it everytime! Please let me know if you have any success! Good
luck-

Try to direct your air a "bit"
more "into" the tonehole rather than across it. Kim

Try working your way down to the
low C. For example, start on middle octave F. Hold the note for several seconds
until you feel you have a good tone, then slur down to E. Then hold the E...
etc. and slur to Eb. And all the way down the line. This is a great way to
develop tone too.

once you get the note, hold it
for as long as you can, and like strawberry said, remeber the position of your
lips. if you lose it, try again [:)] it takes practice..

Speaking of the low C, I have
problems reaching the key with my right pinky as I have rather small hand with
somewhat short stubby fingers. What can I do about it?

I have trouble reaching those
keys also. I was told by my instructor to turn the foot joint a little so my
pinky could reach the keys better. But just a little.

Since you are fairly new to
flute low notes and high notes will come with time. I taught myself how to play
the flute and am doing fine and am caught up with my peers but it took me at
least a few months before that lowest C came out steadily. Also I've noticed
that on one of my flutes many low notes come out clear and accurate and in tune,
but on my other flute low notes are fuzzy and not always audiable (on that flute
the high notes are best and better than my other flute) Some tips: -widen the
"O" shape of your lips -blow air slower across the tone whole -try going from
the higher octave then to the low note -practice, Practice, PRACTICE! [:praise:]
