Hey ya''ll! Seeing as how i''m rather new to this board, can
you (whoever''s interested) tell me a little about yourself. Like age, sex,
how long you''ve played flute, ect. I''d love to get to know you all! I''m
16, female, and I just started playing flute yesterday. So far i think its great
but i''m having to use my piano book cuz I don''t have a flute book yet.
Like I said before I''m hoping to get a flut book soon so I can learn how to
play better. Are there any tips you could give a beginner flutist?

Hey... Congrats on starting the flute!!!! I am very excited for
you.. music is a great part of life and allows you to express so many
emotions..... Just a hint... if you open a hymnal... it has the melody on the
top line and you could play that.... it may be easier than reading the base and
treble clef from piano music... Any way... I am 19 and a college student in
Arkansas.... I have played the flute for gosh... going on seven years now ....
I would encourage you to stick with it... music opens many doors to your life
that you didn't even know were there Good Luck and God Bless [:)] In His

Mucho gracias, I just hope that I can get my flute to make real
music, not the kind that my family keeps telling me to stop playing.

few songs that i'd love to be able to play but don't think i will for some
time. At least till I can memorize all the notes. Gosh, flute is much more
difficult than I thought it would be!!! But it's fun nonetheless. I know, music

Just play the top line that is only the treble clef.... the clef
that looks kinda like a cursive G.... Take your time and play things like away
in a manger, or the first noel... they are very scaler or only consist of a few
repetitive notes... I play the piccolo and the piano... now i am in college as a
music ed major and will be learning string instruments the semester Good luck

I'm not sure which hymnal you are using, but there are some
songs that are common to most. Amazing grace and Simple gifts are both beautiful
hymns that use relatively few notes. That would be a great place to start. Also,
plainsong or chant music usually only has one line, so it's easier to read. The
tricky part is that with a lot of hymns, it's easier to play one octave up.
Until you get used to it, that can be pretty tough to do in your head. I think
Kim gave you the link to Finalemusic in an earlier post. They have a free
program that you can download (Notepad). You can copy the hymn note for note,
and then just have the line you want to read. It helps your music theory skills
as well!

Thank you all so much for all your help! I'm gonna hafta check
out our hymnals at church on Sunday and see how difficult the songs would be. My
mom really wants me to play something in church and I keep telling her that I
can't and she keeps pushing me to. I guess that's a good thing but I get stage
fright if i'm doing something by myself, like i'm fine in choir and if my dad
and i sing but not by myself. I dunno, maybe i will soon, hopefully. Thank you

On playing in church: It's awesome. Most churches have better
acoustics than the average living room. The sound of the flute just soars. It's
also fun because it adds to everyone's worship experience, so you feel like
you're giving your gift back. It's the best. But....wait until you're ready.
Didn't you just start playing? Find a simple piece, work on it for a few weeks,
and THEN approach the music director. If you are confident, it will be better
for everyone, but most especially you. The first time I played in Church was a
Sunday immediately after Christmas (I think it fell on the 26th that year.) The
congregation was sparse, and boy did that help! Good luck, and keep on
playing!

I'm deffinately not going to play anything in church for at
least a few months. I've been playing piano for almost a year now and I still
don't feel very confidant in that so it'll be a while. Yes, i did just start
playing. I'm trying to find easy stuff to play but it's takin quite some time
especially since i've only been able to get stuff off the internet cuz i
haven't been able to get to the music store in town yet. Hopefully i'll be
able to this week when i get my next piano book. Our church is really small
anywho so it's not like i'll be playing for a whole lot of people. On
Sunday's we usually have around 50 ppl so it's not that bad.
