Hi everyone, I had Schmidt pads installed about two years ago on my Haynes handmade Deveau model flute. For the first few months it played ok, but slowly the low and middle register has been disappearing. I'm to the point now where I don't know if I need to purchase a whole new instrument or if it’s the Schmidt pads causing problems. When I play low notes they sound gargly, without core, and as if I had some sort of blockage in the tube (but I don’t…). Would someone please help me know what the deal is? When I play other people's flutes, my low notes sound beautiful and clear so I know it has something to do with my instrument.
PS~ I had my flute serviced last week, so I also don't have leaks...

Re: HELP! Pad Problems?
If your flute wasn't serviced by a technician that was truly experienced and qualified, that could be the problem. If you had it serviced by a top notch technician then it should be in great shape without any issues. Otherwise the only options are to really knuckle down and work on tone (which is probably the issue), or to avoid the probable issue and get a new flute or headjoint.
People change over time and that is why it is a constant battle to maintain a good tone. I lost about 100lbs this past year and it has been a true struggle to adapt my embouchure as my face got thinner. I'm still having to work on it. Our bodies change. I would recommend doing some Moyse studies if your flute was serviced by a good tech.
And FYI, Quadruple/Quintuple posting is a bit annoying. We see your post the first time.
