masking tape on holes

Post by azgoth »

Hi

the C# is known to be very sharp on the flute. A is a bit sharp too, compared to just intonation.

I tried this morning the idea of putting tape on the inside of the flute, under the C# and A holes (the tape is towards the embouchure hole, it's the same thing as if the hole was made smaller or put more at the bottom to lower its note).

Played some tunes then I'm forced to say that the overall intonation is better, I doesn't have to lip down the C# anymore, the A sound a bit better, the 3rd octave E is less sharp. The other notes don't seem to be affected in a perceptible way

Since most of our repertoire use less than 4 sharps/4 flats, I think it make sense to optimize the tuning of the flute to sound best on these keys.... what do you think about this? does someone already tried that?
