Need help with notes

Post by iholland95 »

I need help with my low notes as well as I can see many others on this site do. I play an open-hole flute with an in-line G key. and a B foot-joint. I can't seem to get my low C out. If I attempt to play a chromatic scale, I can feel my fingers shift off the holes as I go to reach for the low C#, C and B.

If you are having trouble keeping the right hand hole covered, you may want to buy a set of open hole plugs. That may help. For some players, the Low C is more difficult to produce and it takes a while to get the embouchure (lip position) right. With the plugs inserted in the right hand keys, see if you can play the low C. If you can, then play with the plugs in for a while (a few weeks or months). After you are comfortable playing the low C, remove the plug from the RH first finger and try the low C again. If you again have problems with the low C, check your hand position. The thumb should be pointing straight out, away from your body; the thumb should not point toward the headjoint. Later move the RH second finger plug and try the low C. When that is secure, then remove the last plug and try the low C. Once the hand position is correct, you should be able to cover the holes when playing the low C.
