I havent heard of it before. Last year I went and watched my friends from high school in their marching band, and their show was rather cool.
It was called "mirror mirror" and every set was a perfect mirror image if you cut it down the middle of the form [sometimes lengthways, sometimes diagonally etc. etc.]. The music was from the rock band called "spock's beard". It had a very arabian sound to it, and was really interesting.
But, I dont know what they are doing next year. My university marching band is doing music from Queen's, but it is a marching band that is geared towards entertainment rather than competition. I am just happy that it turns out that marching band isnt a part of my degree program [it turns out only education majors have to have marching band] so I dont have to do it next year [after 6 years in middle/high school, and an unneccessary year in college, I am tired of it].
Marching band is still very interesting to watch though. If you go onto youtube and search for the "ronald reagan high school marching band" and watch their show 'beyond perimeters' it is AMAZING!

Well, when I was in London I visited Buckingham Palace for the changing of the guards and there was a marching band. There was a light rain (of course!), but tjhey still marched.Buttercup wrote:I am gobsmacked. I live in the British Isles and wouldn't know a marching band if it ran me over. I have never seen ANYTHING like it. What is the purpose of it, would anyone mind telling me? Do you enjoy it? What do you do when it rains??

Oh, that's what you meant by marching band!Buttercup wrote:Yes, military bands do march here, but they don't do choreographed spectaculars like the Ronald Reagan High School band! I'm sorry but it's chalk and cheese

Not all marching bands in the States do choreography (at least not during parades). My marching band in high school only did different formations for football (U.S. version not to be confused with soccer) half time shows.
Does any television station broadcast the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on your side of the pond?

Or more likely (since Thanksgiving would seem to me to be an American holiday), the Pasadena Tournament of Roses on New Year's Day? Not to mention that Macy's does a pretty poor job of showing the bands these days.atoriphile wrote:Buttercup wrote: Does any television station broadcast the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on your side of the pond?

Not sure if this is related, but in the late 60s-early 70s, there was a band named Chase. It was sort of like Chicago or Blood, Sweat, and Tears but mostly trumpets playing up in the stratosphere and it was very high energy rock with a bit of jazz influence infused. Maybe it's a tribute to their music.
On another topic, I'm surprised some of you from the UK haven't mentioned Tattoos! (No, I'm not talking about ink on skin
)
For the uninformed, Tattoos are a British musical tradition. Essentially, a Tattoo is a marching concert although they may include other forms of entertainment as well such as dancing.
Years ago here in the US, my high school band was patterned after the Grenadier Guards and also included a Bagpipe Corps. Every spring, we put on a Tattoo in the gymnasium and performed lots of marching band music (mostly British, of course) and the Bagpipe Corps also marched, played Scottish reels, etc. and danced the Highland Fling!
