Don't think about what she is saying is true but do try
harder evry day to get better so you can play in the ensemble. What grade are
you in?? or are you in collage?? anyways you can always try you best and if you
do I'm sure you will be a great flute player even if you don't get into the
ensebmle okay. If you need any addvice or tips just let me know and I will be
right here to help you.. [;)] Best of luck!!

You are so lucky to be going to England. Sounds like a
truly awesome opportunity. I hope all goes well and you go and have a wonderful
time. Nice to see some Band Directors really working hard to find extraordinary
experiences for the kids. Also to get kids to want to give up free time to work
hard on their music. Hard to imagine that happening here.

But still I don't think she should be saying that she
could say something like this instead. You are a good player but it order to
make the esembely you need to get better because they are very good players and
it takes time ot get that far in flute playing so it will take lots of hard work
and lots of practiced to get to that leverl but I know you can do it. That is
just one of the many ways she could tell you that instead of saying you stink

We didn't have chairs in elementary, but in seventh and
eigth, our badn director just placed us in the beginning of seventh based
on...well..practically nothing. He had us sight read something, and that was it.
Didn't change us for two years. I think I moved up two seats and that was it.
You weren't allowed to challenge anyone, either. But this year, we just play
two scales (our C scale and one other, picked at random out of six given), 2 out
of 20 peices we were given (really short ones....you knoq, those first coupe of
pages in a intermediate book? juat to get our tone) then he'd have us
sight-read something out of the back of that same book. He'd make notes while
we played, compare the notes, thens eat us immediately. It goes by faster than
it sounds (he doesn't waste time on formalities).

At my school what they do for chair auditions is in one
lesson he has us do sightreading. Then the lesson right after that we have 13
scales to memorize, and our chramatic to memorize, and doing etudes (2 pieces of
music he gives us in our sightreading lesson). The chair we get depends on how
well we play the chramatic and etudes or if we are able to do them and how many
scales we can memorize and how many octaves we are able to do.

At my high school my band director plays what he likes
to call "Russian Roulette" in which he goes down the row and you have to play a
particular part (usually a part that needs work or that we've been working on)
and you play it. You have one chance and then he says, up two chairs, down a
chair, etc. and you pick up just your instrument and your music and move.
---------------- On 8/15/2003 11:09:36 AM With
school just starting in many places I was thinking about chair auditions that
will be taking place soon. How does your school do auditions for chairs? Is
there a test or an audition ? What is used for this test....scales, sightreading
a piece of music of your own choice ? Kim ----------------
During the
first few days freshman year, students play for the band director and puts them
into specific bands (we have four bands at our high school, one is the symphonic
band and I forgot the other lol[:p] ). There are probably separate chairs in
those bands but possibly not. I don't know, ::shrugs::

At my school (I'm in middle school, don't laugh at
me), our band director tell us ahead of time what we need to practice for chairs
tests. And then she tells us the date, and when it comes, we go down the row, by
section, and play the particular piece of music or scale that she assigned. We
get graded by our performance and whoever gets the highest grade is first chair,
and so on. Chairs tests are very nerve-racking. We have one this Friday!

our school just got the chair position system. we try
out, get put in our respective chairs based on our auditions, and that's about
it. You can still get moved depending on your playing once you're in. I'm glad
of that. I recently got moved from second to last flute to section leader.
yay.
