Introduction of a newbie

Post by cmybliss »

A big hello to all the members on the board! I'm very excited to be here.
A little about myself:

My daughter started playing trumpet in her school band at the beginning of this school year. She's pretty good, so we signed her up for private lessons as well. Because of vision problems and processing issues, she has a difficult time reading music. This means I spend a lot of time working with her and dealing with the frustration those issues cause. Not being a musician myself, we have been learning together.
Long story short, she decided I should take up an instrument too so we could practice together. This sounded like a great idea to me, so I agreed. Now, the trumpet was definitely out. I just can't blow the thing, and when I do manage to make noise, I sound like a dying moose.
I've always loved the look and sound of the flute. I even tried it in grade school. Sadly, band practice was at lunch recess time, and I had more interest in the bars on the playground than the bars on the sheet music. So, at the advance age of 35 I decided to give the flute another go. Bought myself a flute and I've been having a grand time so far! I'll have to go the self-taught rout for now, as we are already paying for more lessons in more activities for the kiddo than I care to contemplate. Hopefully I'll not make a hash of it, because I promised her that I would stick it out until we both learned to play Headwig's Theme form Harry Potter. If the soreness of my facial muscles on day one is anything to go by, I'm in for a long haul!

Ah, I didn't see this before I responded to your question about your finger! I am impressed. You are using new facial muscles and it takes a while for them to get used to being used. Brava!
Q: How many oboists does it take to change a light-bulb?
A: Only one but she'll need to try 40 or 50 light-bulbs to find the best one.

Thanks! I'm pretty impressed with myself. I remember finding the flute so difficult in grade school. Perhaps it's my adult sized hands that make it less difficult now. I'm thrilled to be able to play the beginning band arrangement of Ode to Joy with my daughter. :D
