Been playing for a week!

Post by JohnnyElsewhere »

Hello, everyone!

Well, to start out .. I've been playing guitar for most of my life and grew very bored with it, unfortunately. It's still a fun instrument to play, but there are so many other instruments that I would love to learn, and flute is on the top of the list.

I currently own an Armstrong student flute and have been studying tone exercises and octave exercises for about a week.

I'm a little confused on how the octave works since I've been told two seperate things by many people. "Tighten your embouchure to create a faster airstream," and "Use your diaphragm to get a burst of air that will make the note shoot up another octave. (From first to second.)".

But, this is mainly an introductory post. I figured I'd start posting in forums to get some help, as well as post videos on YouTube to get even more help from those who have been playing for a long time.

Here is the link to the video I posted only a few minutes ago. It's not the best, but there's only so much one person can do after only a week of playing:

Thank you for reading, and I hope to talk to you all very soon. Feel free to give comments, critiques, helpful tips on my playing if you'd like!

I believe the first advice you described is more correct. Pushing air with your diaphragm, a lot of the time, results in a awfully airy sounding note. Not good. What I've been told is that you should speed up your airstream and change the direction it's going. Also, when you tongue, aim for the tip of your tongue touching, or very close to, the bumpy ridges on the roof of your mouth, rather than directly behind your front teeth.

Congratulation on your progress! Nice effort in your video. I'm a guitarist too that just recently bought my first flute and your doing better at it than me so far. Keep practicing.
