Well I can play passages that way too by doing a technique called Circular Breathing . Look it up its not easy took me 2 years to perfect

To learn circular breathing, start with a mouthful of water, and slowly squirt the water in a smooth fine stream, breathe in and out through your nose and continue the water stream, once you have this down pat, you learn to balance squeezing air out from your mouth reservoir and refill your lungs through your nose.

Should this be done while only using the headjoint lest the corks, pads, skins, etc become waterlogged?

But hey, that "steady-stream" approach might work better for trumpet players, I'm thinking. Although, I managed to get some staccato notes out puffing like a goldfish all the while managing a steady inhalation just now here a moment ago; seems slur work will have to be done using Ye Olde Huff & Puff Blow Thy House Down!
