Recommend Good Flute Instruction Book...

Can you recommend a good
instruction book for me? I have just purchased my first flute and have never
played before. Some years back I recall playing a friend''s flute by ear, and
doing fairly well at it. If you could advise me on a good book or two to
purchase I would very much appreciate it. Thanks so much! Lu

Any of the Trevor Wye series.
Go to www.fluteworld.com and type in Wye, under search. I use alot of his books
for both kids and adults.

Lu, I just started last April.
My teacher uses the Trevor Wye book Beginner's Book for the flute Part One from
Novello publishing. I just discovered they have an accompanying CD, which I'd
recommend if you are starting on your own. I sent to the UK for the cd and some
additional books in the series, from www.internetmusicshop.com. I might have
found them locally and saved the $40 shipping, but I was just too enthusiastic
to wait. Some of the more advanced books in the series pack lots of information
in very few words. Looks like a good place to start. Good luck. I'm enjoying

Many beginner lines of books.
Rubank makes a great series that has been around alot longer than most with
great success. Also the Standard of excellence series and the aforementioned Wye
books that I believe are fairly recent. If you are going to take lessons check
with your teacher. Most have a preference and will want you to have the book
they teach from. All will probably get you off to a good start. Forgot to
mention Yamaha has a system, not sure it is very good or that many teachers use
it. Rubank seems to be the tried and true.[

I learned with the Standard of
Excellence books. It's actually a band method, but it's a great book.

I disagree, I wouldn't use the Standard of Excellence books. For my they were just rhythms rather than pieces, and although my rhythm has become very good, I didn't find them useful.

I highly recommend the Trevor Wye Beginner books. You will learn not only notes, but tone development and technique... it's a fantastic method!

Piano accompaniment is available, and I believe CD accompaniment as well.

just get the Trevor Wye 5 (6??) book collection. For the high register, I recommend Filas' (go to fluteworld and type Filas in, you'll find it). Most teachers use Wye's books anyway, so might as well get the full set.

whe I started I played with Simon Hunt flute lesons. i don't know if your taking lessons or not, but this is a good book even if your not.

The prices at fluteworld.com seemed a little high, so I did some checking...

You can buy the Trevor Wye Omnibus Edition on Amazon.com for much less than you can get it at fluteworld.com, it includes the first five practice/method books. And if you look on the same page, there is a "better together" option that allows you to get the 6th book together with the omnibus edition with another discount.

That makes all six books total up to $38.33 instead of the $83.70 that you would pay on fluteworld.com

Yeah, it's good to shop around for music.. Fluteworld is not the only place to go, but in all fairness, the omnibus edition plus book six is $44 at fluteworld, not $84.

The Trevor Wye books are really good, and you should also look at the Moyse books for tone.

Taffanel and Gaubert!!!!!!!!
The T&G daily studies book is great. Students tend to think it's a little repetitive (which it is) but it is such a great exercise book.

I would also like to point out that my local music store tried to sell it to me for $50...I bought it on fluteworld.com for $23!

Walfrid Kujala's "The Flutist's Progress" contains an excellent fingering chart and beginning instruction. It even has descriptions of how to form the embouchure. It's geared toward the flutist who is still evolving his/her skills. Available from Flute World.

We use the "Essential Elements" in our class. It shows the fingerings for each note, and gives theory along with it. It also can come with a cd & dvd of each song. In the beginning book, the cd plays the notes so you can hear what they should sound like. I like these books so much, that I have bought my husband he bass guitar one, as he can't take classes, and is having to learn on his own. He really likes these books also.
