Tone Color
What is tone color and how can I acheive this?
Tone color is making your tone sound different ways (dark & moody, bright & happy, etc.) to suit the mood of whatever piece you are playing.
Trevor Wye's book on Tone does a decent job explaining the rudiments of tone color. A good way to get different examples of tone color is to buy a CD of a flutist playing songs of many different styles, to see how the tone differs amongs the pieces.

More scientifically speaking, the tone color is a mixture of the overtones with the fundamental. The fundamental is what a tuner would read....For example, a D1. This pitch actually has several harmonics above it (if you overblow it, you'll hear different pitches....You should be able to overblow D 6-8 times). The harmonics above the fundamental can be manipulated by a skilled player to achieve different colors. For example, the "purple" tone described by Wye as dark and reedy has more of the second harmonic in it than the "yellow," which is purer and thinner, and contains mostly the first and third harmonic. I agree that the Wye books do an excellent job of teaching these concepts, and allowing you to work on achieving different colors, and I would also recommend them.

I believe you [merideth] sold it... right? Or it somehow legally left your possession? I do hope you find it somehow. I would keep an eye on ebay. Older Powell flutes go up for sale all of the time. I saw one for sale the other day that had a similiar serial number, but it wasnt the same one.
But, I am keeping an eye out for it, just in case.

Apologies to the OP for causing a thread hijack.
I was the original owner of Powell # 9777 when it was manufactured back in early '97. My family sold it in either late-'00 or early-'01, and the person who sold the flute does not remember the dealer who purchased the instrument.
I'm trying to relocate #9777 in the hopes of making a purchase offer to the current owner, assuming that they are interested in selling for something commiserate with the current retail value, and that there has been no major depreciation in value.
I haven't had any luck finding the purchaser. All I know is that the flute was sold in the "Carnagie Hall-area." The flute wasn't sold to Weissman or Phil Unger, and I never heard back from Anne Pollack. As these are the three main flute retailers in the NYC-area, I have little hope of finding the flute by tracing the chain of title from me to the current owner.
I've been searching the internet, and trying to get in touch with other sources, but so far no dice.
So, I'm hoping that somebody on the board will look at their or someone elses, serial number and make me a lucky girl. Thanks to everyone on the board who is keeping an eye out!
